PowerHA for AIX

  • 1.  Update AIX SP in PowerHA cluster using NIM

    Posted Sat November 26, 2022 09:02 AM
    Hello,

I have a simple PowerHA setup with 2 nodes in a cluster. There's just one resource group with the service IP and a volume group.

I want to update AIX from 7200-05-03 to 7200-05-04.

What is the recommended procedure for running a NIM update_all on a NIM client which is a PowerHA cluster node?

I have 2 separate clusters, UAT and Prod, so I will be using the UAT cluster to test the AIX update process.

    Thanks
    Glenn

    Hello Glenn,
PowerHA rolling migration process can be used here.

    Steps mentioned at:
    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/powerha-aix/7.2?topic=migration-performing-rolling-from-720-later

    Thanks,
    Jes Kiran.

    Hello,

Thanks for this but I'm referring to updating AIX nor PowerHA.

I'm after a procedure to take me from AIX 7200-05-03 to AIX 7200-0504.

    My assumption is that I:

    1. End cluster services on the passive node
    2. Update AIX on the passive node
    3. Reboot AIX on the passive node
    4. Move the resource group from the active node to the update node
Repeat the above for the second node which is now the passive node.

    Hello,
Yes, those steps can be followed.
In between step 4 and 5, start cluster services on passive node.
If passive node also has RGs, then in the step1 stop PowerHA services with move RG option.

For updating AIX on a PowerHA cluster node using NIM, follow these steps:

    1. Backup Your Data: Ensure you have a backup of the system and configurations.
    2. Test on UAT Cluster: Perform the update on your UAT cluster first to validate the process.
    3. Use NIM to Update: Run nim -o update_all on the NIM client for the UAT cluster node.
    4. Monitor the Update: Ensure the update completes successfully and verify cluster functionality.
    5. Apply to Prod Cluster: After successful testing, repeat the process for your Production cluster.

Ensure you follow your organization's change management procedures throughout.

    Hi,

NIM updates are good, but please take a look also into cl_ezupdate command:

    very neat Tool for:

    • Query information about the cluster, nodes, NIM server, or service packs and interim fixes that are located in a specified installation location. The query can be run on the entire cluster or on a specific subset of nodes in the cluster.
    • Apply and reject updates for AIX® service packs or interim fixes. The cl_ezupdate command cannot be used to update the cluster to newer AIX technology levels.
    • Apply and reject updates for PowerHA SystemMirror service packs and technology levels, and interim fixes located in a specified installation location. This process is performed on the entire cluster or on a specific subset of nodes in the cluster. You can also apply updates in preview mode. When you use preview mode, all the prerequisites for installation process are checked, but the cluster updates are not installed on the system.
    • Reject AIX service packs, PowerHA service packs, and interim fixes that were already installed on the system. This task is performed on the entire cluster or on a specific subset of cluster nodes.

Upgrade PowerHA SystemMirror using the cl_ezupdate command

    Ibm remove preview
Upgrade PowerHA SystemMirror using the cl_ezupdate command
You can use the cl_ezupdate command to update the software for the entire cluster or a subset of nodes in the cluster, often without disrupting workloads.

And before doing anything, make sure to take all needed backups (mksysb, PowerHA snapshots etc)  like Ben already said.

    Excellent suggestion Tommi.

It's been a while, but here's a blog of mine (from 2018) that demonstrates how to use cl_ezupdate. http://gibsonnet.net/blog/cgaix/html/Updating%20your%20PowerHA%20cluster%20with%20cl_ezupdate.html
