Schedule suggestions for BRMREORG?

    WRKJOBSCDE JOB(BRMREORG)

    Schedule date  . . . . . . . . :   *MONTHSTR
    Schedule time  . . . . . . . . :   00:01:00

Record 1893 in use by job or transaction 054318/QUSER/QRWTSRVR.

Is this likely due to BRMS network feature and some other system letting everyone know what tapes it consumed?

When I finally took the R option to retry (within the last hour) I had a few locked objects.  There should be no backups running anywhere currently.

Hi Robert...We run the reorgs manaully so I don't have a suggestion in terms of timing..I can, however, say, that you  have some otpions availabe for sure...Here are the 2 that I think may help...

1 - use reorg while active (yes, you have to journal - but that can be a temp thing just for the reorgs)

2 - wrap the reorgs into a CL, hold the BRMS related jobq - do your reorg, then release the jobq....

    hope you find a solution...

BRMREORG is not just slang for "Hey, I've written a program which lists the brms files and reorgs them."  It is an IBM (or assignees) supplied program used to reorg the BRMS files.  I'm not interested in customizing that, nor crafting my own.  I'm trying to find out how to best utilize their tools in a BRMS network environment where all the LPARs grab tapes from a shared pool.  And they communicate to each other who has what tapes.

Considering that BRMREORG is NOT an actual supplied IBM command, at least not that I have ever seen  I have no idea what "BRMREORG" actually does in your environment....- I can only make some assumptions without any stated facts ...

who said you had to customize it. Wrap it in a CL PGM that does what you need to do - you can then monitor for the record in use msg  delay the job and retry.

Another option - change the job to use the system reply list - and use that instead to give it an R.

We have a BRMS network pool of around 25 servers, we do ours on a quarterly basis - mostly in the mornings after our backups complete.

    Understandable.

    Replace with STRMNTBRM RGZBRMDB(*YES)

Maybe you already took a look at https://helpsystemswiki.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/IWT/pages/165642373/Organizing+and+Managing+BRMS+Operations

There are a couple of considerations about BRMS database reorganization.

Not bad.  I gleaned from that I should be ending that one subsystem prior to running the STRMNTBRM RGZBRMDB(*YES) and then restarting it.  This involves either writing a program, or switching from the basic job scheduler to the advanced job scheduler.  I'm sure the people who really are in charge of brms now would probably prefer I use their job scheduler.

One of the nice (IMHO) pros of AJS is that you can set several commands for each job, reducing the need of writing small programs. So ending a subsystem, maintaning BRMS, restarting the subsystem within an AJS job could be a solution. We can even set a MONMSG for each command. When I was working, this was only done through (Heritage) Navigator for i. I don't know if it is possible now with either the new Navigator or a 5250 interface.
I believe that AJS is now a no-cost LPP, included in IBM i charge.

Something to consider..the job that had a lock was the QRWTSRVR job which can be any number of lpars in your brms network..This means, that its not just ONE subsystem you are ending, it would be any of the BRMS subsystems in your network . Example - you are trying to runt the reoorg on System A, however, System B sends over a tape update/sync....the sbs that needs to end in this situation is system B, not necessarily system A. (although you might want to). Unless all lpars are on the same schedule for the reorg and FINISH in roughly the same time...this could prove to be a bit messy. I still think that it may be a better idea to wrap this in a CL where the msg can be monitored and then retired OR setup the reorg job to use the system reply list and have it auto answer with an R. Good luck regardless

I suppose I should open a case.  Because you have a good point about that subsystem.  At least let them try to explain their thought process.  Perhaps they were under a belief that a comm attempt is tried prior to the QRWTSRVR job.  And that comm attempt uses the subsystem I'm supposed to bring down.  Strange thought but I'll hear them out.
