Hello:
I prefer upgrading the Power9 firmware by USB, is a very automated mode to do without intervention. You first must check that the HMC code is compatiblñe with your firmware, in this web: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/hmc-and-system-firmware-supported-combinations
If not, you must upgrade first the HMC to latest supported level that is compatible with your actual firmware and your future firmware. If your actual HMC code is OK, you can download the Power9 firmware from fixcentral and copy to a USB stick using this procedure: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/power10/9043-MRX?topic=gff-installing-firmware-using-usb-port-service-processor-ebmc-system-that-is-not-managed-by-management-console Is a non-HMC managed tutorial, but inb my shop we have everythiong managed with HMC and the procedure works as intended also.
The machine must be powered off to do the upgrade, you must low-level format the USB in FAT32 (not quick mode) and copy only the rpm firmware file. Later, when Firmware is upgraded, you can gain control to the HMC and continue with your operations.
