    Hi,

    Quick question:

    Are these Time Reference Partitions still required nowadays:

    Time and Date Management with PowerVM

    or could PowerVM / Service Processor somehow sync the time directly  from HMC?

    Since now when we deploy new VM from our Default image > Time is always totally wrong after 1st boot...and needs to be fixed manually before NTP can be started..

    On HMC we have NTP config so that is OK, but we don't have these TRPs enabled ..
    Or if TRP is needed, can VIOS be TRP partition? (since on VIOSes we have NTP set as well, so time is OK on those..)

    Br,
    tommi

    It is not only can, it is even recommended:

    Because the TRP is responsible to maintaining the current time for the FSP and the PowerVM hypervisor, a TRP cannot use partition migration to move to another server. For this reason, you might want to create a partition just for this purpose or use partitions that cannot be migrated to other servers (for example VIOS partitions).

    • Using TRP on a dual VIOS configuration with ntp/ntpdate is sufficient (also keep HMC on NTP if possible) as a best practice.

    In VIOS, how can we start xntpd with the -x option?
    I followed the step-by-step Configuring NTP in PowerVM VIOS but xntpd starts without it.
    Or is this flag not desirable for a TRP?

    Kind regards,

    Hi, you can try this.

    $ stopnetsvc xntpd
    $ oem_setup_env
    # chssys -s xntpd -a "-x"
    # lssrc -Ss xntpd
    #subsysname:synonym:cmdargs:path:uid:auditid:standin:standout:standerr:action:multi:contact:svrkey:svrmtype:priority:signorm:sigforce:display:waittime:grpname:
    xntpd::-x:/usr/sbin/xntpd:0:0:/dev/console:/dev/console:/dev/console:-O:-Q:-K:0:0:20:0:0:-d:20:tcpip:
    # vi /home/padmin/config/ntp.conf
    ; Add "slewalways yes" to /home/padmin/config/ntp.conf
    # exit
    $ tail -1 config/ntp.conf
    slewalways yes
    $ startnetsvc xntpd
    $ grep slew config/ntp.log
    5 Oct 00:33:57 xntpd[20840702]: xntpd started with slewalways=yes defined in ntp.conf
    $ ps -ef | grep xntpd
    root 18219158 7143644 0 00:52:52 - 0:00 /usr/sbin/xntpd -x -c /home/padmin/config/ntp.conf
