In February of 2020, IBM announced the intention to adopt open source LLVM infrastructure for the next generation of IBM XL C/C++ and Fortran compilers. As an active sponsor and strong supporter of LLVM, IBM is committed to bringing the benefits and innovations from the LLVM community to our enterprise clients.
With the launch of IBM Power10, the IBM XL C/C++ and Fortran compilers have been modernized and re-branded to “IBM Open XL C/C++” and "IBM Open XL Fortran". IBM Open XL C/C++ and Fortran compilers combine Clang/LLVM technology with IBM's industry-leading optimizations, which have already been released on AIX platform in September 2021. Now we are bringing this next generation compiler to Linux on Power platform too. We are very excited to announce that IBM Open XL C/C++ and Fortran for Linux on Power 17.1.1 are generally available today!
Similar to IBM Open XL C/C++ and Fortran for AIX 17.1.0, these new Linux on Power compilers offer the best of both LLVM infrastructure and IBM’s advanced compiler optimizations. They also provide values such as full Power10 architecture exploitation, faster build speed and flexible licensing options.
IBM Open XL C/C++ and Fortran for Linux on Power 17.1.1 add support for the latest Linux distributions such as RHEL 9.0 and Ubuntu 22.04. They also support IBM Advance Toolchain 15.0.
