HMC, CMC & Enterprise Pools 2.0 Enhancements in 1H 2024

As a new Power system S1012 was introduced in 2Q 2024, there are also updates to HMC, CMC and Enterprise Pools 2.0 with new enhancements.

To start with, HMC V10 R2 M1060 is an update on HMC V10 R2 M1050 and you can update to 1060 from 1050 with or without additional service packs. 

HMC V10 will manage Power10, POWER9 and POWER8 systems, but will not manage POWER7 systems. 

Systems & Virtualization Management Enhancements: 

In addition to support for FW1060, S1012 system, new IO adapters, Support for multi-path for NVMe in Expansion Drawer, following features have been added. 

New Environmental Dashboard:

With the continued focus on sustainability and energy usage, HMC 10.3.1060.0 adds a new dashboard for viewing sustainability metrics with

  • Graphical views on Power Usage, Carbon footprint, Inlet temperature for selected time duration.
  • Ability to export metrics into CSV or Json format.
  • Ability to view core usage or thermal metrics along with Power Usage in the graph
HMC Environmental Dashboard

The default value of Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) (1.5) and carbon intensity (0.25) can be modified by using the chpcm HMC command. You can also view the configured value by using the lspcm command.

Virtualization Management:

  • KVM in a PowerVM Lpar:
    • Ability to create/enable capability for running KVM in a PowerVM lpar
    • Supported only on dedicated processor partitions
    • LPM/Remote Restart operations not allowed for partitions enabled to run KVM in a PowerVM lpar
    • Requires HMC 10.3.1060.1
  • Ability to add/remove multiple adapters dynamically to/from the partitions from GUI. Enhancement to support multiple adapters add/remove/move from CLI
  • Add a tag to a system and apply same tag to all partition/VIOS 

User Experience Improvements:

As we continue the journey on user experience improvements, multiple functions have been revamped with a new and improved user experience with HMC 10.3.1060.0.

  • Console management
    • New option of IBM website for HMC upgrade function
    • New views and user experience for 
      • Save /Restore HMC upgrade data.
      • Backup and restore critical console data
      • HMC restart/shutdown functions
  • System management and CoD
    • New views on System Actions: PowerOn/Off, Add/Remove/Reset connection, Change/Update system password etc.
    • Ability to perform power off by selecting multiple systems.
    • New User Experience for Capacity on Demand functions
    • System profile and partition profile
    • Simplified view on list/create/manage system profiles
    • New User experience for managing partition profiles
  • HMC User Management
    • Simplified and new user experience for
      • Active users, Running tasks, Actions to logoff active user or close running tasks.
      • User profiles, task roles and resource roles
      • Create users/task role/resource roles.
      • LDAP, KDC and MFA enablement.
  • Service management
    • New views and User experience for
      • Call home management, options to setup call home and test call home connection.
      • System firmware updates panels
      • BMC settings
      • PCIe configuration
      • Manage LED states and view cable details

CMC & Power Private Cloud with Shared Utility Capacity a.k.a Enterprise Pools 2.0(EP2.0) Updates:

Cloud Management Console (CMC) provides insights for your Power System infrastructure and is the platform for Power Private Cloud with Shared Utility Capacity a.k.a Enterprise Pools 2.0. New CMC updates that were rolled out in June 2024 comes with the below feature enhancement, scalability improvements and infrastructure improvements.

  • Ability to add non-admin users to access Enterprise Pools 2.0 app in read only mode which provides the ability to view and export data.
  • Improved User experience in the inventory page of patch planning app 
  • Ability to set thresholds for Enterprise Pools 2.0 base core usage
  • Ability to view CMC subscription information as part of the inventory app in CMC, which will provide information on current subscriptions, expiration date and a summary view
  • Support for 96 systems in a Enteeprise Pool 2.0.
  • New APIs to create and assign tags to resources.
