SAP on IBM i: Welcome to the Quarter Century Club

By Christian Bartels posted Mon June 28, 2021 05:40 AM

Today marks the 25th anniversary of SAP on IBM i. With the release of SAP Note 40265 on June 28th, 1996, SAP R/3 3.0C was made available in general for OS/400 V3R6M0 as the first SAP release on OS/400, the predecessor of IBM i. Over the past 25 years, both hardware and software have been significantly enhanced: from the Muskie 53S 4-way processor with 154 MHz to the POWER9 E980 48-way processor with 3.9 GHz, from OS/400 V3R6M0 to IBM i 7.4 and from SAP R/3 3.0C with an EBCDIC database to SAP NetWeaver AS ABAP 7.52 with a Unicode database and countless new features over SAP R/3 3.0C. The tremendous amount of experience that is collected in the evolutionary development of the modern SAP products on IBM i is the basis for stability and reliability of your SAP system today.

Wow, 25  years.  Many fond memories of working at the ISICC.  I do remember very well the transition from EBCDIC to ASCII many years ago now.
