Jumpstart your UNIX sysadmin skills with AIX training!

By Chris Gibson posted 13 days ago

Introduction:

So, you've been working with UNIX operating systems for a long time, but you've never had any exposure to AIX? And, your manager has just told you that you and your team will now be responsible for some new AIX systems. Perhaps you've inherited some AIX workloads or your organisation has invested in some new applications that will run on shiny, new IBM Power servers, running AIX.

Is this you? Well, if you have previous experience of any other of UNIX, for example Solaris, HP-UX or Linux, then you'll probably be very interested in the latest course from the IBM Power Technical Training team.

The AIX Jumpstart for UNIX Professionals class is designed for experienced UNIX sysadmin's that need to get up to speed with AIX, and 'go deep', very quickly.

AIX Jumpstart for UNIX Professionals (AN14G): https://www.ibm.com/training/course/aix-jumpstart-for-unix-professionals-AN14G

Experienced sysadmin's are often well versed in the machinations of UNIX system administration, and all they really need is to learn the major differences between the UNIX OS they're most experienced with, and the AIX OS. Sure, AIX is similar in many ways to other UNIX systems, but in order to truly master it, sysadmin's must learn the subtle differences and nuances of AIX, before they can comfortably take charge of the day to day administration of AIX.

AN14G is structured in such a way that it provides focused training for experienced UNIX administrators on how to install, customize, and administer the AIX operating system in a multiuser IBM Power server partitioned environment. The course is based on the latest version of AIX, 7.3, providing practical discussions on typical sysadmin tasks (which are also appropriate to earlier releases of AIX).

This intermediate course is intended for system administrators who need training to support their transition to supporting AIX running on IBM Power servers in a partitioned (LPAR) environment.

Prerequisites:

Before attending this class, ensure that you are able to use basic UNIX commands to do the following:

·      Execute basic AIX commands

·      Manage files and directories

·      Use the vi editor

·      Use redirection, pipes, and tees

·      Use the utilities find and grep

·      Use command and variable substitution

·      Set and change Korn shell variables

·      Write simple shell scripts

The above skills can be acquired by attending AIX Basics (AN10D1DG or AN10G) or through equivalent AIX/UNIX knowledge. Take a look at this blog for details on AN10G, https://community.ibm.com/community/user/power/blogs/chris-gibson1/2023/10/16/level-up-your-aix73-skills

As this class is designed for seasoned UNIX admin’s, you are expected to have hands-on experience administering a UNIX operating system (such as Solaris, HP/UX, and others) including, performing admin tasks such as:

·      User management and system security

·      Storage

·      Networking

·      System shutdown and restart

·      Backup and recovery

·      System task scheduling

Course objectives

The objectives of the course are to teach you the following critical AIX sysadmin topics:

·      Install the AIX operating system, filesets, and RedHat Package Manager (RPM) packages

·      Perform system startup and shutdown

·      Discuss and use system management tools such as System Management Interface Tool (SMIT)

·      Manage physical and logical devices

·      Discuss the purpose of the logical volume manager

·      Perform logical volume and file system management

·      Perform and restore system backups

·      Use the AIX error log and RMC as tools in problem determination

·      Configure Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) networking

This is a comprehensive 5 day course, covering everything from the basics of AIX administration, all the way up to some of the more advanced topics, such as LVM troubleshooting, advanced install techniques and the AIX system dump facility. Here’s what the agenda for the 5 days, looks like:

All of this helps to reinforce your knowledge and provide a rock-solid foundation from which to build upon your AIX skills. The AN14G class covers the most important topics to help new AIX administrators grasp the essentials of AIX system administration.

There's a badge!

Not only will this course help you to build your AIX skills, but upon completion of the class you’ll also be eligible to attain a new AIX badge. You can display this with great pride, advertising your desire to acquire new skills and highlighting your achievements in mastering your craft.
