In a series of articles, I planned to give details of the new Performance Monitor Graphical User Interface.
Lets understand first what is the difference between the new 'Performance' task and the legacy 'Utilization' data function. The legacy function's capabilities were as follows:

Provides Processor & Memory related statistics only

Only sampling is done but statistics will not be harvested or rolled-up

Very minimal GUI interface which just shows the data in tabular form
The new 'Performance' function provides the following capabilities:

Provides all resources statistics (Processor, Memory, Network & Storage)

Statistics fully harvested, rolled-up & preserved in local database

Rich graphical interface with snapshot & various trend views

Rich set of statistics (more than what legacy function provides)
Following are some limitations of the new function compared to the legacy function in version 810:

Fixed sampling interval of 30s (in contrast with legacy where a user can set interval greater than 30s)

No Command Line interface for new function, instead REST APIs are provided. It just takes few days to accustom to the use of REST APIs.

Now lets see how to turn on the new 'Performance' function.
Click HMC Management on the left navigation panel and then click Change Performance Monitoring Settings task. You will see the following screen:
The button can be used to turn on/off individual Managed System Monitoring or the All On/All Off button can be used for global control. The Green colour position of the button indicates that the monitoring is On.
Now lets see how a user can launch the Rich monitoring interface. First you all need to be aware that the rich interface operates only on per Managed System level and doesn't provide all Managed Systems view. Hence a user need to select the Managed System that he want to monitor and then right click it, choose the Performance task.
This will launch the new rich graphical interface.
Above I explained various areas of the new monitoring function. With this I am ending this part of my article and in my part-2 I will detail about each layer, metrics that layer provides.
I hope this article helps users to quickly start using the new monitoring function.
