User Specific messages in PowerVC

Admin Bob was surprised to see that a new volume has been attached to his 'RHEL 7.5 dev' virtual machine. He immediately checked the 'Messages Tab' of his PowerVC project dashboard and was able to find that someone had attached the volumes on Dec 4th at 10 PM. However, he was unable to track the exact user who made this change, and this needed further debugging.

What if Bob was able to track the user information too for all operations from the same page? Here's the happy news for Bob and all the admin folks out there!

Starting PowerVC 1.4.4, along with other information like timestamp and type, you will be able to view user information for all actions performed within the project. With this, you will now be able to track the user who has performed an operation within your project, without feeling clueless on whether it was you or some other user who performed that action.

As shown in the above image, a ‘User’ column is displayed on the Messages page which shows details of the user who performed some action. The display of the Messages panel varies for each user based on their role. Non-admin users will be able to view only operations that are relevant to their role(s).

Example scenario:

A shared image ‘RHEL7_img_staging1’ is not available for deployment in projects other than ibm-default. While debugging the issue, the admin user goes through the messages panel of his project and finds that user ‘noah_admin’ has changed the visibility of the image, and this has caused the issue.

Some examples with other roles are listed below:

    • User - 'amelia' with image-manager role
    • User - 'jenny_storage_manager’ with storage-manager role

    • Messages panel for a user with ‘admin’ role

The ‘system’ user

You will observe that the user is displayed as a “system” for certain operations. User displayed as “system” refers to all the System level operations performed internally by service users. These are not operations that are performed by any of the logged-in users.

Conclusion

Tracking user information for every operation within a project has become easy with the above new feature from PowerVC 1.4.4. It helps you understand if an action on a resource was automatically performed by the system or by a user.
