  • 1.  File types not clickable after updating to macOS Venture 13.2.1

    Posted Wed March 29, 2023 09:37 AM

    Hello,

I'm on an MBP M1 Max running macOS Ventura 13.2.1 I've tried updating to latest version of Aspera Connect 4.2.5.306 and every time I go to browse for files to upload the filenames of the files I want to upload flash as black/clickable for a second before getting grayed out. This was working a within the last week or so before I had updated my OS so I'm thinking this is what could be the issue. I've tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling, verifying full disk access in security preferences, rebooting many times, as well as wiping ~/.aspera directory but no change.

For anyone that maybe runs into this I found it appears to be a combination of macOS Ventura 13.2.1 and Aspera Connect 4.2.5.306 (and possibly 4.2.4.x). My coworker had a lower Aspera Connect version as well as the same macOS version as me and it worked for him so I fully uninstalled the Connect version I had and found the old downloader for 4.2.1.116 and after installing that I can finally select the filetypes I've always been able to select for upload.

    Hi Jason,

Here are a few things you can try (as well as some questions) that hopefully narrow down the issue for us:

    1. I'm assuming you're referring to the select file dialog for uploads. You mention the files are greyed out - does this happen on a per-file basis after clicking one or for all files immediately after the dialog opens?
    2. Are folders clickable and able to be uploaded? If so, it could be that the dialog that's opened is intended for uploading folders and not files.
    3. Can you try with another piece of software that isn't Aspera Connect? For example, try attaching a file to an email - do you see the same issue?
    4. We just recently released Aspera Connect 4.2.5 last week, and while it seems to work on our end on macOS Ventura 13.2.1, you could try going back to Aspera Connect 4.2.4 and see if that resolves the issue. Previous releases are available on the website (https://www.ibm.com/aspera/connect/) under "See all installers".

    Let us know, thanks!

Not the original poster but we are seeing an similar issue (albeit slightly different versions of software).
We have M2's running Ventura 13.3 (and one with 13.2.1) and we've tried Aspera 4.2.5 as well as 4.2.1.116 and 4.2.4.265 to the same effect.
We've verified Aspera connect has Full Disk access (and uninstalled/reinstalled & applied/reapplied, etc.
The files are completely greyed out and you can't access them; but what is strange is if you remove the file extension they will show up as not greyed out (but you still can't select them.
Verified that we are in fact selecting the option to select files not folders
Using Chrome, Word, etc. we can see and access the files in a normal format but when using Aspera everything is greyed out as if we don't have permissions

We are running into a very similar situation; albeit with slightly different versions.

We are running Ventura 13.3 (though started with 13.2.1 and updated the OS thinking that might resolve)
    We've tried 4.2.5, 4.2.1.116 and 4.2.4.265 to no change
If you attempt to upload anything; it is all greyed out
Might be worth mentioning that if you remove the file extension; it becomes not greyed out (but still can't upload the file)

    To answer your questions.
    1. All Files as soon as you open the dialog
    2. Verified this is for files not trying to upload a folder
    3. Any other software works as expected (assuming you have provided the permissions)
    4. As mentioned; we've tried different versions of Aspera but only after going to 13.3

    1. Correct in the select file dialog for uploads. This happens to all files, on occasion I would very briefly see them flash as black/selectable but then immediately turn grey/un-selectable.
    2. Folders are clickable in that they are black and I can select but that just opens the folder instead of selecting it for upload as a whole, I've never been able to upload as a folder but maybe that's a restriction via the config on the integrated site end. Meaning this is an aspera integration into webapp one of our teams has built, not like an IBM AoC webapp instance (such as [company].ibmaspera.com)
    3. Not sure I follow this one but I don't have time at this moment to re-download software that isn't working on my machine. I was for sure able to attach files into other apps though such as Slack and Outlook as it's part of my normal daily routine. I had done a few full reboots while trying to troubleshoot this issue in addition to uninstalling and reinstalling.
    4. As I mentioned in my follow up response above I did indeed have to downgrade back to 4.2.1.116 as that one seemed to be functional for my coworker. Unsure where exactly it broke between that one and 4.2.5 but my initial issue was definitely using 4.2.5 Not sure why you guys aren't having the same issue on your end but it seems I'm not the only one as I see Eric below has reported similar issues.

For @Eric Richards I too saw the thing with removing an extension as I at one point tried the Aspera Test Connection page here: https://test-connect.ibmaspera.com/ and the file it downloads is without extension and I noticed in subsequent troubleshoting that it was black/selectable.

    Hey everyone,

I ran into the same issue this week and found a good workaround. I use Aspera Connect to upload large (10GB+) video files to a platform and ran into the "greyed out video file" problem.

First I figured it was my OS so I upgraded Mac OS to Ventura 13.3.1 and after multiple installs/re-installs of Aspera Connect and the Chrome plugin I finally downgraded to 4.2.3.197 from this page on the IBM site.

As of now it's working fine - I was able to successfully select and upload a test video via Aspera as I've done hundreds of times before. Hope this helps someone out who's dealing with the same problem!

Thanks everyone for the additional context. I think we may have a reproduction on our end, and it seems to be a regression introduced in one of the newer releases of Connect. It only seems to occur on macOS.

Specifically, a web application can instruct Connect to open up a select file dialog. This dialog can be opened with a set of "file filters" such that the end user is only able to select certain files with a specific extension (ex: only allow uploading ZIP files). This particular bug only occurs when the web application sends a set of these "file filters" to Connect.

Aspera on Cloud does not utilize this "file filters" feature. However, another web application that integrates with Aspera could use this feature, which explains why it does not reproduce consistently for all users (i.e. it depends on the Aspera integration you are using).

This seems to align well with the observations above and hopefully my explanation made sense. As of now, the workaround is to downgrade to an older version of Connect on macOS. On my macOS 13.2.1, downgrading to Connect 4.1.3 worked well - though I did not exhaustively test other versions.

Sorry for the frustration - I have opened up a ticket on our end and hopefully we'll have a fix made available soon.
