We are announcing our future plans for the deprecation of the Appliance Mode installation in DPOD. This statement of direction is intended to provide our customers with advance notice of our intentions, allowing them to plan accordingly.
Background
DPOD currently supports two server installation modes: Non-Appliance Mode and Appliance Mode. The Non-Appliance Mode requires customers to manage the operating system, while the Appliance Mode includes both the operating system and the DPOD application, managed and updated by DPOD.
Future Plans
We plan to deprecate the Appliance Mode installation in the future. This change will allow our customers to have more control over their operating system and meet their organizational standards.
Options for Customers
Once the Appliance Mode is deprecated, customers currently using it will have two options:
- Keep and maintain the Rocky Linux 9.x OS: Customers can continue using the Rocky Linux 9.x OS deployed during the installation of the Appliance Mode. However, OS updates will become the customer's responsibility, as DPOD will stop releasing operating system updates.
- Reinstall DPOD Non-Appliance Mode on top of RHEL 9.x (or 8.x if necessary): This is the recommended option, at least for the long term. Customers will need to have RHEL licenses and reinstall DPOD Non-Appliance Mode.
Next Steps
We will provide a formal deprecation announcement and a detailed migration plan in the future, outlining the specific timeline and steps for the deprecation of the Appliance Mode installation.
If you have any concerns or questions, please contact your IBM representative to discuss any concerns you may have with the above plan.
