MQ for z/OS 9.4 performance report is now available

By Anthony Sharkey posted Tue August 27, 2024 05:17 AM

Following the announcement of IBM MQ 9.4 Long Term Support, I am pleased to say that the IBM MQ for z/OS 9.4 performance report is also now available.

The report shows that when migrating to 9.4, the performance of existing workloads will remain comparable.

In addition the report details the performance of the new features, and I will briefly highlight some of those features below:

  • Using zHyperLink to write to MQ active log data sets. This can increase the peak write rate of the MQ active log task by up to 5.9 times.
  • 64-bit support in the channel initiator for SVRCONN channels, decoupling the impact of large messages from limited 31-bit storage. This can allow up to 2.5 times the number of concurrent SVRCONN connections that previous releases of MQ were able to support for messages up to 256KB.
  • Further enhancements to the queue statistics trace, providing significantly more data to assist the monitoring of specific queues without impacting the cost of class(5) statistics trace.
  • Optimizations to the streaming queue MQPUT1 performance when using shared queues.

Additionally MP16, the capacity planning and tuning guide for MQ for z/OS, has now been updated for MQ 9.4 to include the impact of zHyperLink support for MQ active log writes and 64-bit support for SVRCONN channels in the channel initiator.

These documents, along with many other performance documents can be found on the mqperf github repository.
