DMC v3.1.5 - Unable to add connection profile

  • 1.  DMC v3.1.5 - Unable to add connection profile

    Posted 7 days ago
DMC throws below exception while adding connection profile, is there anything we are doing incorrectly?

"Profile name must start with alphanumeric characters and can only contain alphanumeric characters, underscore(_), hyphen(-) and address sign(@). The maximum length of profile name is 255 characters."

Some naming options we tried for connection profile

    TESTDEV1
    1TESTDEV
    TEST_Cluster_1

Also, there is no direct way we could see to edit the connection profile to change the values and save it rather we had to completely delete it and re-add, which looks weird.

    Hello Krishna,

What's the connection profile name you were trying to add and then got the message "Profile name must start with alphanumeric characters ..."?

TESTDEV1, 1TESTDEV, and TEST_Cluster_1 are valid connection profile names, the DMC wouldn't prevent you from creating the connection profile with these profile names.

And the connection profile name is not allowed to be modified after it's created.
    Thansk.

    Hi Tao,

Agree, there is no issue with the profile name I was trying. I worked with IBM support and end up the issue is with the privileges of the connection profile id. The exception we got here is totally misleading hence requested IBM to fix it.

    Hi Krishna,
Where did you get the message?

In my test, when I adding a new connection profile, it requires me to indicate the connection profile name at the beginning, and if I input an invalid connection profile name, for example, "_myProfile", the UI shows me the message "Profile name must start with alphanumeric characters ..." which tell me the profile name I just input is not valid, so I change the profile name to "myProfile" and the message disappears. I think the message is correct here, nothing misleading me. So I am curious whether you encounter this message at another place.

    Thanks

    Hi Krishna,
May I describe the issue as below?

You are trying to edit a  connection profile, after you click the edit button, it showed all the fields of the connection profiles. The connection profile name is not allowed to change (which is as expected), but it unexpectedly showed a message in red "Profile name must start with alphanumeric characters ..."

    Thanks

    Hi Tao,

    Let me explain again

The original issue is, we are unable to add connection at first place with the exception "Profile name must start with alphanumeric characters ...". (Screen shot attached earlier). The connection name I was trying is very simple i.e., "OVNDEV1".

When worked with IBM actual issue found as the lack of privileges for connection id, totally agree but the exception we got on UI is totally misleading and I'm sure no one's attention goes to the privileges side :-)

The second issue is unable to edit the profile name, when the exception says it doesn't like the name provided, so we thought of edit it. Curious why there is a restriction in edit the profile name?

    Hope this clear ...

    Hi Krishna
In your screenshot, it is an edit connection page (the connection profile name field is gray out), the red message is unexpected because the profile name is valid.
We have fixed a related cache problem about this at the DMC 3.1.5.1. it will not show that incorrect message after you open an existing connection profile.
In DMC315  you can refresh the page to clear the error message.

Why there is a restriction in edit the profile name?
The connection profile is the basic resource we used in DMC, the connection profile name is referenced by our other components, once the connection profile name is changed, nearly all the components can't get the connection profile for connection. So we restricted to change the profile name.

    Hi Tao,

Good to know the issue has already addressed in DMC 3.1.5.1, and there is a workaround in DMC 3.1.5.0.

A side question, DMC 3.1.5.1 is an interim fix or major release with new features?

Is below the link correct to follow to upgrade DMC 3.1.5.0 to DMC 3.1.5.1?

    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/db2-data-mgr-console/3.1.x?topic=release-upgrade-by-using-script-method

    Hi Krishna,
Yes. please follow it to upgrade your DMC.
Just a reminder, please backup the original DMC installation folder before doing the upgrade.
    Thanks
