CP4D OCP version obslete on arrival?

  • 1.  CP4D OCP version obslete on arrival?

    Hi
So new NPS is container inside CP4D (CloudPak for Data) which when I look on release notes in on: 3.11

    https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SS5FPD_1.0.0/com.ibm.icpds.doc/admin/system_overview.html

When I check Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform Life Cycle Policy
Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform Life Cycle Policy (non-current versions) - Red Hat Customer Portal

It seems that RedHat (an IBM company) seems to provide Full Support only by end of June 2021.
I understand taht this comes as an appliance and support is going to be same as for Netezza (the whole). But seems like on day 1 we are going into legacy / abandonned technology.

What is the upgrade plan for CP4D to something more modern (for example OCP 4.6)?

    Hello Adam,

Our current OCP 3.11 is the latest 3.x version and is fully supported by redhat until Jun 2022

    v3.X End of Maintenance Schedule

    Nov 2018 Jan 2019 Apr 2019 Jul 2019 Oct 2019 Jun 2022
    3.0 & 3.1 3.2 & 3.3 3.4 & 3.5 3.6 & 3.7 3.9 & 3.10 3.11

We are currently working on integrating OCP 4.x into the cloud pak system so it will be available in future upgrades but we can not provide a precise ETA at this moment.

    Hello Adam,

Our current version 3.11 is the latest of the 3.x branch and is fully supported by redhat until Jun 2022.
Our appliance will follow the IBM life cycle so it will be longer supported.

    v3.X End of Maintenance Schedule

    Nov 2018 Jan 2019 Apr 2019 Jul 2019 Oct 2019 Jun 2022
    3.0 & 3.1 3.2 & 3.3 3.4 & 3.5 3.6 & 3.7 3.9 & 3.10 3.11

The NPS is running on a docker container and is not controlled by OCP. It is managed by the platform software.

    Regards
    Rafael

    Hi

Still not answered question: why there is no OCP 4.X?

1,5 year (Jun 2022)  is not the time you are buying large enterprise data warehouse. And this date is time for extended support. Full support (so more focus on support side) is by June 2019.

I would not complain if OCP 4.X would not exist yet – but it is: for last half year is officially GA.

Again – it seems we are on day 1 getting on tech which is obsolete .

When CP4D will be upgraded to newer version? Where we can find IBM's official commitment for that?

    Br,

    Adam

Its being actively worked on and will most likely be available in q2/q3.

    Hi Shekar

So to clarify: IBM is working on upgrade of existing CP4D/NPS appliances which are having OCP 3.11 to upgrade to OCP4.X – without a need to replace hardware, data migrations, system reinit etc. We just treat it as software patch I hope/NPS upgrade? If that is the case then I'm relieved.

That is correct.  We are automating the entire process of upgrading from OCP 3.x to 4.x.  There will NOT be a need to restore NPS data or to acquire new hardware.  In the process, an NPS upgrade may be required.

    Hi Shekar

One more thing – maybe a bit sceptic:

    https://www.openshift.com/learn/topics/migration

But seems like in order to migrate from OCP3 to OCP4 you actually need to build new cluster...

And also there is a matter of RedHat – which I understand this in CP4D is on extended support – but seems RHEL7 got out from Full support last year in August?

    https://access.redhat.com/support/policy/updates/errata

I know that OCP 4.6 support only RHEL 7.7-7.8 for computing nodes and can't work with RHEL 8 – that seems to be a bit of paradox?

That is true.  OCP 3 to OCP4 is a rebuild of the OCP cluster, but our NPS design enables us to make this upgrade happen without needing to reload data.  More details will be available when this release is generally available.

We are in the process of rolling out RHEL 7.9 on CPDS.  When available, OCP4.x based CPDS will be on RHEL 8.x/CoreOS/Kernel 4.18+

    Hi Shekar

Any news on CP4D based OCP v.4.X release?

Also: will it be oc on nodes e1nX or it still remain with IIAS based AP scripts?

This is being actively developed and tested right now.  It will very likely release around min-end of q3.  Since implementation is subject to change,  i request we wait for the official release of the software and it's documentation.

    Hi Shekar

Any news about CP4D 2.0 based NPS? Will it be upgrade or migration? How long it would take to upgrade existing NPS CP4D with 11.X version?

Most likely by mid-end of Oct, CPDS 2.0 will be available for customers installing CPDS for the first time or customer who have tolerance for larger downtime. Procedures are being designed to see if NPS can be online during the migration.  This may be available by Q1'22.

    Hi Shekar
What do you mean by migration? Will it be pure software upgrade of RHEL, CP4D and NPS or it require additional hardware to be in place?
