IBM Netezza Performance Server now supports cloud stores for backups

Posted On: 21st December 2020

You can now use Amazon S3 and IBM COS cloud stores as database backup locations. NPS backup and restore utilities, nzbackup and nzrestore now provide new native connector named S3. Same connector works with both, Amazon S3 and IBM COS cloud stores.

nzbackup utility streams backups directly to cloud stores without staging them on Netezza host. Similarly, nzrestore streams backups stored on cloud directly to NPS database engine. All other preexisting backup and restore features such as, multi streams, users, globals, no data, table level restore, contents, incrementlist etc. are supported for the new cloud connector.

This new connector enables seamless migration across NPS on-prem and Cloud system. You can backup NPS on-prem data on Cloud stores and restore it into NPS Cloud system. Furthermore, you can use new utility nz_s3Connector for migrating data across PDA and NPS. The nz_s3Connector helps migrate existing PDA filesystem backups to cloud store and then you can use nzrestore to use same backupset to restore data on NPS.

To start using cloud store for backup, you need ACCESS_KEY_ID and SECRET_ACCESS_KEY credentials. You need to have a bucket created in the cloud store and which can be accessed with above credentials. Backup and restore takes argument called UNIQUE_ID which helps segregating backup data from other data in the bucket.

Additionally, to backup and restore from IBM Cloud, you need to provide the ENDPOINT.

nzbackup supports multipart upload feature. MULTIPART_SIZE_MB is a configurable argument. You can use this to tune your upload performance and upload costs depending on size of backup and expected time available for backup.

This capability has been introduced in Netezza Performance Server version 11.0.4.1 onwards.
