As databases grow and evolve, table and index fragmentation can become a significant challenge, leading to inefficient storage utilization and degraded query performance. This session provides a deep dive into the structure and maintenance of Db2 LUW tables and indexes, with a focus on the REORG process as a critical performance tuning strategy.

Attendees will gain a solid understanding of how Db2 organizes data and indexes, and learn how to identify when reorganization is necessary. The session will explore the different types of REORG operations: REORG TABLE, REORG INDEX, and Online vs. Offline REORG, along with best practices for selecting the right approach based on system availability and performance goals.

Whether you're a DBA or performance engineer, this session will equip you with the knowledge and tools to maintain a healthy, high-performing Db2 LUW environment.

Speaker:

Wei Cao

Wei Cao is a Senior Technical Manager at the IBM Canada Lab, where she leads core kernel development for Db2 on Linux, UNIX, and Windows (LUW). Her areas of expertise include Tables, Indexes, Buffer Pools, Table Space Management, and has recently expanded to LOBs and Data Movement Utilities.

With over 15 years of experience in Db2 kernel development, Wei has designed and implemented numerous key features, including:

  • MDC Reclaim Extents – enabling efficient space management for MDC tables
  • Online Index Create for pureScale – significantly improving system availability
  • Parallel Insert for BLU tables – delivering major performance gains
  • Currently Committed for pureScale – enhancing scan concurrency
  • Control File Mirroring – boosting system resilience

In 2023, Wei led the Availability Development Team, delivering Intra-Tablespace Parallelism (ITP) and advancing the infrastructure for Transaction Log Management and HADR log replay.

She is currently focused on evolving the Db2 kernel into the industry’s leading AI-powered database engine, driving innovation at the intersection of data management and artificial intelligence.
