  • 1.  z/VM Subcapacity Monitoring Setup

    Posted Thu January 05, 2023 01:35 PM
In order to setup z/VM Subcapacity Monitoring we were told we needed to setup a zLinux guest with ILMT running on it.  We have installed BigFix, we have installed ILMT, we have added ILMT proxy to the zLinux guest.  We are unable to collect data.  Is there a check list available or any tips on where we go from here?

    Hello there,

It's little confusing what is meant by '...to setup a zLinux guest with ILMT running on it'
The only component which needs to be installed on zLinux guest is the BigFix Agent.
    Has this been done ?
If so, is this machine discovered on BigFix Console ?
If so, has the 'Install or Upgrade Scanner' fixlet been executed against this endpoint ?
If so, is the 'Run Capacity Scan and Upload Results' fixlet relevant ?
If so, what is the exit code upon running ?

At last, our documentation contains a dedicated clause for Linux on z Systems for case where automatic capacity configuration is not supported,:

    I found this process:

    Procedure

    1. Log in to the BigFix® console.
    2. In the navigation tree, click Sites > External Sites > IBM License Reporting (ILMT) > Fixlets and Tasks.
    3. Select Create Capacity Configuration for Linux on z Systems and specify the following values:
      • Machine Type
      • Processor Type
      • Shared Pool Capacity
      • System Active Processors
    4. To run the task, click Take Action.
    5. Select computers for which you want to create the capacity configuration, and click OK.
The fixlet is relevant only on computers on which creating the manual configuration is required.

I performed the above.  We are still unable to collect data.

    Hello Ryan,

In such case, Support ticket seems to be the only option to go further...

    Hi Ryan,

The problem statement is concise. Hence it is difficult to understand the root cause of the issue.

I am under the impression that you are following this document:
    https://www.ibm.com/downloads/cas/KZQM4D9N

Please note that the ILMT scanner (installed via BigFix Client - or separately as a disconnected scanner) must be installed on every VM with IBM software.

The link below might also be helpful:
Creating capacity configuration for Linux on z Systems (BigFix scenario)

    Consider opening a support ticket.

    Grzegorz Szczepanik,

Thank you for your reply, and my apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Your impression was correct that I was following this document:
    https://www.ibm.com/downloads/cas/KZQM4D9N

I did perform the steps in the subject:
Creating capacity configuration for Linux on z Systems (BigFix scenario)

We are still unable to collect data.

I will open a support ticket to see what can be done.
