    Hello z/OSMF community,

Please help confirm or correct my java requirements understanding.

Reading Marna Walle's cross post, I think z/OSMF 2.5 requires Java 8 and z/OSMF 3.1 requires Java 17.  Is my understanding here correct and where is the best documentation to reference for this information?

    Thank you,

    Tracy Ison

    Hi Tracy!

My understanding is that z/OS 2.5's default is Java 8 and it supports 8 and 11 (the latter through Nov 2024). z/OS 3.1's default was Java 11; however, when Java 11 reached EOM in 1Q24, Java 17 became the default on 4/1. Therefore, clients on 3.1 are recommended to transition to Java 17 by end of Nov 2024.  The official publication change is available on the following page: z/OS 3.1 Planning for Installation, Software requirements for running z/OS 3.1.

Sounds like you've already seen it, but for those that haven't, Marna's recent blog breaks it down nicely with support/ timeline graphs. (Marna also has a previous blog that has similar information but might be a helpful read.)

Please let me know if you have any other questions. Thank you,

    Hi Tracy.

If you are looking for the 'official' z/OS documentation it is of course in  "z/OS Planning for Installation" manual in the section "Software Requirements for running z/OS 3.1":

    Hi Tracy,

The answer to any question about what the z/OS release software dependencies are, is always the z/OS Planning for Installation book, Appendix B.  https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/zos/3.1.0?topic=installation-software-requirements-running-zos-31

I've also blogged about the Java and z/OS 3.1, if you wanted a more casual discussion:  https://www.marnasmusings.com/2024/04/no-time-for-fooling.html  .  In general, I've already blogged about finding z/OS software dependencies, and how z/OS is different than other products which use something I call a "Software Matrix" website, which you can find here:  https://www.marnasmusings.com/2024/01/beyond-matrix-clicking-your-way-through.html

Hopefully those links will address your questions, but if you find you need more, please let us know!
