  • 1.  Workspace Forecasting - Default Options

    Having installed workspace 2.0.60, the changes to the Forecasting feature are definitely an improvement (being able to preview multiple elements and define which history is used.)

    However, it seems that the default behaviour is to pick up only the history which you are displaying in the view. It's an easy change to flip it over to take the whole cube's history instead but I think it makes more sense to have it default to the entire history.

    • Most Planning views would likely only be set up to show 1 (maybe 2) years worth of history for comparison.
    • Most uses of the forecasting feature would want to include more history than that, certainly 1 year won't give any useful insights in most cases.

    Be interested to see what others think but I'd like it to default the other way or possibly give us a config toggle where we can choose the default method. Not a super urgent/important idea but something that I think would improve the User Experience in the long run (due to fewer clicks.)

    Agree, tbh it would better if we didn't need to show all the history in the view that we are using to then display the forecast.

    As you say, to get an accurate forecast you need more than 1 or 2 years history, but to have a view on screen with let's say 48 columns (4 years history) that you have to scroll past to get to the forecast data seems cumbersome. Ideally we should be able to select a historic date range for Actuals that doesn't need to be displayed.

    HI , thanks for the feedback, it was decided to make the exploration view the default value as, expanding the history automatically required more setup for models with complex time dimensions (i.e if the dimension members have multiple parents, the dimension includes rollups, etc.), requiring the creation of alternate hierarchies. Using the view will give flexibility to those users as they will not have to alter their model. We got feedback backing each option as a default, I guess it is something that can be revisited if it turns the automatic history expansion is the dominant case.

    I recently posted a time dimension generator that generates true named hierarchies instead of needing alternate hierarchies. You might want to take a look at that.
