[WORKSHOP] Champions Who Don't Brag (But Probably Should)

Edited by Marek Malinowski Wed November 19, 2025 05:19 PM

    Hey all!!!

I'm thinking about running an online I Am Remarkable workshop specifically for the IBM Champions community. Consider it my Movember contribution - just with fewer moustaches and more honest conversations about why talking about our achievements feels harder than debugging a production deployment on a Friday afternoon.

This is actually my first post here, and I'll admit I'm not entirely sure if this is the right way to do it. But if I don't try, I won't know - so here I am, tossing this idea into the Champion universe and hoping it lands somewhere sensible. Some of you might remember me from TechXchange 2025, where I co-led a session on soft skills (this one: Session Catalog -)  If you were in that crowd, yes, it's still me, this time waving from behind the screen (and not the stage)

For anyone new to it: I Am Remarkable is a global initiative that helps people feel more confident speaking about what they've accomplished. Not in a braggy way, but in a healthy, grounded, human way. It's about challenging the cultural and social norms that make self-promotion feel awkward, especially for people who're used to quietly getting things done without making a fuss.

And since this will be part of Movember, here's the extra twist. Movember isn't just about moustaches - it's about men's mental health, asking for help, talking openly, and breaking the classic "I'm fine" routine. Many of us are great at celebrating others, yet weirdly hesitant to acknowledge our own wins. That combination - silence plus stress - doesn't do wonders for wellbeing.

So why not take 90 minutes to practice lifting ourselves up a bit? No pressure, no spotlight, just a supportive group learning something genuinely useful. If at least 15 people want to join, I'll propose a date and time - will find something in late European time - zone - so many of you would be able to attend and benefit from this!

If you're curious, interested, or simply thinking "huh, maybe this is exactly what I need," let me know (drop me a DM)

If we reach the magic number, we're on.

IMPORTANT: this workshop is for free, part of my volunteer work and giving back to others!

    Hi Marek,

I love the idea (and I'm a trusted "Movember" adopter since years) . I fully agree with the idea to expose ourselves a bit more positively and more as "you" (not as an actor that plays a role once again :) ) . Count me in.

    Hello Marek,

    Dziękuję Pan,

Tak. I am interested in this.

Your approach is similar to the German Literature definition of "humility", which simply states that if one has humility, that means he/she knows BOTH, his/her strengths and his/her weaknesses (not bragging).

I did not see your presentation at TechXchange 2025, but am very interested in participating in your proposal.  Let's include both sexes, since - my opinion - this isn't gender specific.

    Best to Us All,

    Hey Thomas!

You are absolutely right - this is not gender specific and I should make it clear EVRYONE is welcome.

I've just used Movember movement as a starting point for this discussion. I would even go further - I'm happy to have non IBM Champions, non IBM professional, we could even people that are not using IBM (are there any???) :)

This is truly for everyone. The more people are aware about it, the easier is for everyone!

And small spoiler: It's nor bragging if it is based on facts!!

Good morning, this is a great idea.  I try to always practice humility and kindness; though I can't say that I'm always successful at it.  ;-)  Though I generally prefer to avoid the spotlight, I like the concept and would be willing to participate if you are still looking for people.  I'll help represent the opposite gender.

    Hi Marek,

This sounds like a fantastic idea, thanks for putting it out here!
I have to admit: talking about my own achievements never comes naturally to me either, even though I encourage others to do it all the time. So this really resonates.

I'd love to join. I'm not an IBM Champion (yet!), but I'm hoping 2026 will be the year and sessions like this are exactly the kind of push and perspective I appreciate. Looking forward to seeing this come to life!

I was not expecting so many replies... and thanks!

Now it MUST happen! Later this week, I will provide 2 potential dates - because I want to target as many people as possible - the more know about it the better for all of us!

... does anyone know a good, free and simple tool for looking a timeslot - where people can vote and the tool will calculate my time-zone to the relevant zone of a person?

Time to vote and decide on the date of the workshop.

Following advice from Jean-Marie Smets, I created a Doodle:
    https://doodle.com/meeting/organize/id/eXVE4V8b

I provide two potential time-slots one during week and one on Sunday.

I will be running the session if I will have at least 10 participants - and if none of the slots work for you - don't worry - looking at the response here I will be organizing another one!

The more people know about this, the better for all of us!

If possible, please provide your responses by Wednesday 04/12 (EOD).

and Happy Thanksgiving for folks in US!!!!!!!

    Thanks!

    Hey Nezih,

I totally get you - 6am for me is middle of the night.... the challenge here is that I'm trying to do the impossible - find a slot to suit whole world :)

For now I'm gathering inputs... if I will not have enough people then I will propose new slot. If one of those two slots will be ok (at least 10 participants) then I will run it and - as promised - I will come back with another slot probably early January. So... you will have an opportunity to participate - "pinky promise"

ok, I will put it here as well, for now two proposed slots are:

    • Friday 05/12/2025 14:00 - 15:30 CET (2:00 - 3:30 pm CET)
    • Sunday 07/12/2025 16:00 -17:30 CET (4:00 - 5:30 pm CET)

Currently I have 6 people interested in the workshop on:

    • Friday 05/12/2025 14:00 - 15:30 CET (2:00 - 3:30 pm CET)

If anyone else is would like to participate please vote here:

For those that will not be able to join - I will organize second session - "pinky promise". Recording - not possible because of two reasons:

    • this is a workshop and the main benefit is from "doing"
    • "vegas rule" - what happens during the workshop, stays between participants only :)

It looks like I will see some of you next Friday! Once I will have at least 10 people I will share the link to the meeting.

With this post I would like to say KUDOS to over 10 amazing people that decided to join first "I'm Remarkable" workshop for IBM Champions and IBM fans!

It was amazing 1.5h, I think it was success - but I'm not objective - since I was leading the workshop :) so maybe someone could share feedback here and convince (or warn :) ) to join another workshop.

BTW. after New Year, I will be looking for another batch of people that would like to join this workshop - I will write new post on that!

    Thanks! //BR Marek

Thank you so much for today's workshop Marek.

"I'm Remarkable" was more than just a session; it was a genuinely great experience. Many of us quietly struggle with talking about our accomplishments without feeling like aliens, and today, you helped us experience what healthy self-recognition can look and feel like.

I would also like to thank all the participants. Their openness, honesty, and willingness to share made the session even more meaningful.  As we do every day in the IBM community, learning from one another made today's workshop especially valuable.

Thank you again for the energy, empathy, and clarity you brought to the workshop. I left feeling more confident and aware, and definitely more "Remarkable."

    Hey Thomas!

I will host another session sometime in January - so watching this space.

As for recording - those meetings will not be recorded, because of two reasons:

    • Vegas rule - whatever happens during the workshop stays between participants only
    • it's a workshop - so the participation is critical to get the most out of it.

Thanks a bunch for your amazing workshop, Marek!

I can second all that was said so far and will be said ;-).

It was VERY well spent time on a Friday afternoon and gave us a lot of insights that we can share with our colleagues and mentees!

    Marek,

Let me echo everyone else and say thank you for putting on this incredible workshop!  It was an eye-opener, to say the least!  If you host more, I would like to encourage everyone, both those who expressed interest this time but could not attend and all others to attend.  You will be amazed at what you will learn about yurself!

Thanks again for a truly AMAZING session!

Thank you for the workshop Marek.  It was very insightful and was a great "space" for the group to discuss and share our own experiences so many facets of this topic.  Wonderful session!
