  • 1.  Why am I having issues running cluster analysis?

    Posted Fri January 15, 2021 02:41 AM

The program is basically frozen when I try running a cluster analysis. It says "Running CLUSTER..." but never actually produces an output.

How big is your file and which clustering procedure are you using?

The file is not that big, and I am trying to run hierarchical cluster analysis. I did factor analysis before to come up with a set of factors to use in the cluster analysis (in addition to another variable), but every time I run that, the CA never produces an output and says "Running Cluster". I tried doing CA with other variables in the data set that weren't the factors from factor analysis, and it worked. So I'm just so confused as to why I am having issues when I use the FA variables for CA.

I would have to see the syntax and data to figure this out, but one thought is that if the factors have a lot of fractional values and the orignal variables don't , you might be looking at an extremely wide diagram. Hierarchical clustering doesn't scale very well that way.

Is there any way to contact you directly? I am not the greatest with SPSS. Or could you tell me how I can look to see if the factors have a lot of fractional values and the original variables don't? That way I can reply back here what i find.

You could run Frequencies on the factor variables.

If you want to send me the data and syntax for the clustering (jkpeckSupport Member) I can take a look tomorrow.

I have the same problem and wonder if you managed to solve it? Can add that I have successfully run cluster analysis several times on the same dataset and the same variables before so it seems strange that it doesn't seem to work anymore... Have tried reinstallning the software etc.
