    Posted Thu January 23, 2025 04:03 PM

Analysis Studio is no longer available in Cognos Analytics 12. Dashboards are easy to learn but the analysis options are very limited. However, if you want to switch to Cognos Reporting, you need a good introduction (due to the complexity of Cognos Reporting)

A colleague from Apparo has created a video course designed to help Analysis Studio users moving to Cognos Reporting more easily. You can check out the course, which provides clear guidance for making the switch.

For the next four days, you can enroll in the course for free via this link:

    https://www.udemy.com/course/ibm-cognos-analytics-12-ad-hoc-reporting-with-cube-data/?referralCode=63888FA2D6B8A344045F&%3F&couponCode=BYE-ANALYSIS-STUDIO

The course is still under construction. We need your input: What other topics should we include?

What challenges are there with the changeover?

Tip: As the course will of course be developed further, the discussion here will probably quickly become outdated. Check directly in the course to see which topics are now available.

I look forward to your feedback!

    Jens

P.S. In my opinion, the course is also ideal for analysts who are to work on TM1 / Planning Analytics Cubes, PowerCubes, Dynamic Cubes or DMR models.

Thank you for sharing this.  I signed up for the course.  We are using Cognos 11.2.4, and one of the main reasons we're not looking at Cognos 12 is the absence of Analysis Studio. In our use case, our users of Analysis Studio are not content creators/savers; we use Analysis Studio for ad-hoc analyses on the cube/aggregate data, within the relatively clean/simple interface of Analysis Studio.  Our Analysis Studio users do not have authority to access Report Studio and create/save reports.  So one of my questions and potential topic suggestions is how to handle permissions for users (so they can't create/modify/delete reports I build), and if changing user permissions would have licensing implications.  Another useful topic to me would be whether there is a relatively easy way to permanently modify the Reporting interface to clean up  / simplify the interface for users who would not understand detailed cube design (e.g. levels and members) and are used to being able to simply drag and drop items from the left side menu into the work area (crosstab).  I have not recently reviewed the IBM documentation ("Comparing Analysis Studio ...with Reporting..."), so I don't know if that information has been updated, but when I did previously it seemed like my questions/topics were not covered.

    Thanks again!

    Hi Mike.

Good Points. We'll add an Video for creating a start template.

In the administration it is only possible to change the interface to a limited extent, but in the roles there are the "features" where e.g. the pages/queries... can be hidden.

We will add a video in which we describe a start report. The user then does not start with a new report, but always uses a report in which the crosstab, filter display and the most important context filters are already pre-assigned.

Properties should be hidden. Always start in PagePreview and the member display from the source.

Then you can start directly with your analysis using drag & drop:

Thank you Jens!  I appreciate your reply.  I will need to block out some more time to continue with the course, and also review the suggestions people have made.  I am grateful for this forum!

    Hi Mike,

one important step for us was to set package capabilities so users can enable the edit mode for Analysis Studio replacement reports but not for standard reports based on the same cube. I created two packages where on only contains the cube and the other holds the cube and some additional table from the DWH for our professional report creators.

The capabilities for the pure cube package were not edited but the one for the professional users. Go to the properties of the package -> Capabilities -> Set capabilities. In our environment I used the Everyone group to deactivate dashboard and report creation on that level. The result is that ad-hoc analysis users can create reports based on the cube package but cannot enable the same for pre-designed reports based on the other package. Same applies for dashboards if needed.

There's also a very useful xml file on the system where you can set default settings for report studio which aren't available in the Admin UI: ..analytics\webcontent\bi\pat\DefaultSettings.xml. Have a look!

Hi Robert, I have not had to explore the Capability settings on the packages up to this point, so thank you for those specifics.  Since I'm the only one at my organization responsible for managing Cognos, I need my "administration" check list as simple as possible : )  I will set aside some time to try these settings.  Again, much appreciated.

    Hi Mike -

Here is the link to an article I wrote on the subject a few years ago... I thought it would be worth sharing in hopes it might help.

    Hi Mark. Good document.

I think we have included the points in the videos. But I will also check the document again to see if we can add anything else.

    Thanks for the link!
