MQ Telemetry Transport (MQTT) is the name for a specific lightweight messaging protocol used to connect remote physical devices, or mobile phones and other computing devices to MQ networks, for the purpose of exchanging real time or near real time data. This has been available for a number of years as a part of the WebSphere MQ product with the clients, that support the MQTT protocol being part of the Open Source Eclipse Paho project, to enable multiple vendors to take the source code and adapt the clients for embedding in their own devices. Subject to suitable licensing, MQTT can connect into WebSphere MQ Queue Managers to enable the seamless integration of these remote endpoints into the MQ infrastructure. The recent updates to both WMQ and the MQTT clients available from IBM have enabled these clients to more easily be deployed in Android or iOS mobile environments, as well as WebSocket enabled Browsers. In order for MQ Servers to be licensed to accept MQTT connections, the MQ Server must be licensed, either through a WMQ Telemetry license or through the customer having some WMQ Advanced licenses in their enterprise.
