The following Question came from the December 13 webcasat "Migrating from WAS V61. to V8.X = Huge Benefits"

Can 8.5 exist in mixed version environment and also can Liberty profile after being created on WAS 8.5, be run on earlier WAS versions?

    Hi,

Yes, the full profile of WAS v8.5 is supported in a mixed version cell. The Deployment Manager that manages the cell has to be v8.5. It will also support WAS v8.0.x, v7.0.x and v6.1.x in that same cell.

The Liberty profile can be packaged as a zip file including applications and configuration. It can run anywhere unmanaged. So, yes it can run in the same image as an older WAS version or any other environment that supports running Java.

For calls in ND, Rule o f thumb is the DMgr must be the same of higher in version than any managed node federated into the cell.

Coexistence (installation)locally for stand alone or for multiple ND cells is all about port and file-system isolation/installs, maybe even use of multiple IPs. Watch our for IP vs FQDN depending on your org this can cause issues.

Agreed, clarification - it is a requirement that the DMgr must be the same of higher in version than any managed node federated into the cell.
