  • 1.  VIRTUAL NETWORK ISSUES ON POWER10 WITH 10GbE Base-T adapters

    Posted 24 days ago

    Hello,

We have a new power 10 (S1022) which has PCIe3 4-port 10GbE Base-T Adapters, two VIOS (4.1.1.0), power firm is 01ML1060_88. HMC version is V10R3M1060.

    client LPAR (AIX 7.3).

We face issues on virtual network communication.

Virtual network setup has been done as usual: virtual adapters creation with trunking priorities on both vios for SEA with PVID and other vlans, virtual adapter for ctl_chan, virtual networks created using mkvdev command, the virtual network with load_sharing appears normally on hmc view.

But, none of the VLAN can communicate, physical switch ports are tagged correctly also.

is there any known issue or particularity for virtual networking on these adapters, power firmware version... ?

    Physical switches are cisco nexus.

PS: we have old power 8 that operates correctly (with same vlan, sea config) on these nexus switches.

    thanks in advance

    Hello,

operate these Adapters in SHARED of DEDICATED Mode?

I am Aware about some Performance issues with FW1060 and PCIe4 Adapters. Not with PCIe3 Adapters.

    Best regards

    Hi,

based on IBM support informations i assume you have FC EN2W and EN2X; CCIN 2F04 adapter type. Is this correct?  https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/power10/9105-22A?topic=adapters-adapter-information-by-feature-code
Can you confirm the switch port is in the correct mode. Trunk not access?
What about the SEA physical backing device state?

We hit an issue where we had a S824 that would connect to the Cisco ACI fabric and exchange ARP information, but nothing else.  It turned out that we hit a bug on the Cisco side.

    https://bst.cloudapps.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCwc55404

Here was the workaround from Cisco.

"As for the workaround, this issue should only affect MAC addresses that start with 0xEC or 0xEE. If you encounter this issue, check if your MAC address begins with the octets above; if it does, you can try updating the MAC address."

    Hi,

Two items to consider. Ensure that the adapter microcode is at the latest level as this can have a bearing on your issue.

Get rid of the control channel. I had an issue where the sea would not behave as expected and handle the virtualization of the network properly and the issue was the internal control channel vlan that I was using.
Create the SEA using the VIOS default 4096 VLAN. When you create a SEA in sharing mode it will automatically use the 4096 vlan.

    This resolved my issue.

    regards

    Hi,

did you consider the correct vSwitch mode. VEB, VEPA?
Maybe entstat -d entX [SEA] would be helpful output from VIOS.
Any diagnostic error entries on VIOS?
