I have been looking at ways to implement version control at server level for webMethods development.

webMethods IS on prem – 10.3
VCS – GIT repo using TFS
Looking to do a – Full package & Partial package commit at IS level (NOT by doing local service development).

All documentation I am looking at are around local service development. I have two questions here.

1. How to do IS server level commit for multiple users (full/partial release)
2. Advantages / disadvantages of version control at local vs server level.

(In different project implementations, we have always used IS with cross vista and maintained repo at server level.)

the preferred way would be to use local service development with central (i.e. GIT) repository adressed via Eclipse plugin in Designer.
From there the code can be deployed to central development IS for internal integration testing, from where it can be provisioned to QA and Prod via Deployer.

The Built-In VCS feature in IS is very cumbersome to configure and supports only very few VCS systems (Visual SourceSafe, Rational ClearCase and Subversion) while the Designer/Eclipse nearly supports every VCS system for which an Eclipse plugin exists.

We do successfully combine development on a central server with using a rather exotic VCS system by copying files from the central server (where the development takes place) to the local machine and committing to VCS from there. The procedure is half automated with scripts and can be applied to any VCS. It’s most comfortable if there is an Eclipse plugin for the VCS (which is true in our case). But this is not strictly necessary.

1. Can we have our central Dev unix filesystem setup as a local (& viewed on by the TFS for changes). The changes can then be committed to a Dev_Repo.

2. When we use TFS-GIT with webMethods designer, is there a way to create Partial package releases (zip of changed files)

3. How does the ABE fit in?
