When a volume group is varied on it places a lock in the VGDA on the disks to prevent other machines to vary on that volume group even if the disks are available to that second machine. The -b option breaks this lock. This causes the volume group to be varied on even if the VGDA states that the volume group is active somewhere else. This is especially useful in a clustered environment with shared volume group. If a node is killed with "halt -q" it doesn't remove the volume group lock and the second node is therefore forced to vary it on with the -b option to force it's way through the lock.
The -u option varies on the volume group with out placing a lock in the VGDA. Can't out of my head pinpoint an example where this will be useful...
