The -b option breaks this lock. This causes the volume group to be varied on even if the VGDA states that the volume group is active somewhere else. If a node is killed with "halt -q" it doesn't remove the volume group lock and the second node is therefore forced to vary it on with the -b option to force it's way through the lock.

    The -u option varies on the volume group with out placing a lock in the VGDA. Can't out of my head pinpoint an example where this will be useful...

    I used to use the varyonvg -bu many years ago as a 'better than lazy update' for HACMP clusters. When a VG was modified (file system expanded, etc) run a varyonvg -bu on the owning cluster node and then an importvg -L on the other nodes. Once done, run a varyonvg to reapply the lock
