  • 1.  Variable comparison

Just trying to do a basic comparison. Essentially I have latitude data reverse-geocoder on an excel file, and I want to make 2 new variables (columns) on an existing spss file that already has latitude and longitude data, so that I can copy and paste the data from the excel file and ensure that each row from the original data is the same as the new data from the excel file.

Basically, I have variables (latitude, longitude) that should be the same as the corresponding latitude/longitude that I am pasting back in, and I just want to make sure all the rows have lined up correctly (as the data contains over 1000 rows)

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I am very new to SPSS and trying to do this for a research project. If there is a site that has basic tutorials or something along those lines that can be recommended that would be very beneficial.

    Cheers

It isn't clear to me what more information you need to copy and paste the Excel columns into the Data Editor, but a better way to do this would be to use SPSS to import and merge the Excel file.

First, you would import the Excel file into SPSS as a new dataset using File > Import Data > Excel.

Then make sure both datasets are sorted by thelat/long variables.

Finally use Data > Merge Files > Add Variables to add the variables from Excel into the main file. No error prone copy/paste is required.
