  • 1.  Value labels not working

    Posted Fri October 02, 2020 06:21 AM

Hello everyone, I am a rookie in SPSS.

I generated a frequency data set with 16 variables. I have entered value labels but I am not able to: 1. toggle to switch from label to value, and 2. Use Chi Square test because on the the frequency header shows in the panel, the variable header doesn't.

This is very urgent please as I need it for my analysis.

    Thank you all.

I do not quite understand what you mean? Which SPSS version you have installed on which operating system?

For example with SPSS Statistics 27 on Windows 10 on Data Editor there is an icon on icon bar that has 2 arrows and a red A and a red 1. When you click on this icon you will see the value labels (you have defined on variable view tab) on data editor instead of the values. The variables with value labels should have a nominal or ordinal measurement level. When you then create a FREQ table with Analzye- Descriptive Statistics - Requencies the resulting tables on output viewer will then have the variable label (if defined on variable view) as title and the value labels on the rows of the FREQ

Support Member, thank you very much for your response. I am using SPSS Statistics 27 on Mac.

The first problem I had was that the icon you described wasn't responding every time I clicked, but I was able to work around the data in the data editor by double clicking each cell and that solved the problem. Now the icon works.

However, I still have a problem with the Chi Square in Nonparametric Tests in Legacy Logs. Nominal and Ordinal variables don't come up. Only Scale variables show up. How can the problem be resolved? please help.

Dear All, I'm glad that I have been finally able to resolve all the issues. The learning for me is that all variables, including Nominal, have to be 'Numeric' under Type in Variable View.
