  • 1.  v12.1 Community Edition, dropped features !?!?!

    Posted Mon November 18, 2024 07:28 AM

the new 12.1 version dropped several features that were available in equivalent edition (dev-c)  in 11.5 release.

This is really !@#$@#$%#$%.   several customers implemented such features, and now they can't continue using it..    Well done IBM,  moving backwards..

But what worries me most,  is the Point-In-Time Recovery not being available anymore..

Db2 database product editions and deployment options - IBM Documentation

"Db2 Community Edition is subject to capacity restrictions of up to 4 cores and 8 GB of memory per physical or virtual server and functional restrictions including High Availability Disaster Recovery (HADR), Security (Native encryption and audit logging), Federation, Backup (Point-in-time recovery),..."

I can't believe this !  So, you are forcing everyone that is currently using community edition just fine, taking regular online backups, and forcing them to take offline backups from now on !?

DB2 12.1 Community can't be used in production environments anymore. Namely this is the most significant "feature" of this edition.
As for the PIT recovery feature... It was probably decided, that non-prod systems don't need it along with other ones listed above.

    Hi Samuel,

We have rolled back those feature restrictions for Db2 Community Edition. Updated announcement is here: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/announcements/delivers-db2-121-next-generation-enterprise-database-powered-by-ai

We are working on updating the documentation page by end of day today.

Capacity restrictions of up to 4 cores and 8 GB of memory per physical or virtual server and non-production limitation will still hold true.

    Hi @Shripad Sonavnay

It is still a HUGE regression !

For years  , I guess since db2 9.x , IBM offered it's free db edition to be used for small systems , and they all could be used in production with no issues, from licensing perspective.

There is a huge baseline out there using Db2 free edition, and now , they can't move forward anymore.

Glad to see that the feedback of the DB2 TAB in Valencia prior to IDUG has (mostly) been taken on board.

    Shripad,

This page in the documentation: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/db2/12.1?topic=editions-functionality-in-db2-product still shows all of the restrictions in Db2 Community edition.  When will that page be updated?

It's also not clear whether Db2 Starter Edition will continue to have the restrictions that were lifted from Community Edition?  (especially Point-in-time recovery of database backups, HADR, and Native Encryption and audit logging).

... and how the BPP (Big Product Planners) will try to explain why Db2 pureScale feature - allowed in Db2 Community Edition 11.5 is now explicitly forbidden in Db2 Community Edition 12.1?
