  • 1.  Upgrading to 11.2.3 on-premise environment

    Hello,
New to this community. We have an old old old version of cognos....10.2.1 to be exact. So definitely time to upgrade. Is there a guide for this new install basically? We have a lot of data and the user has a lot in their my folders. So we would need to make sure the data is migrated over to the new server.

    Thanks!
    Justin

    Hi @Justin Rogers

if you are only upgrading the Cognos version, then Full Contentstore Export on the OLD machine and then import on new should do the job.

If I remember right, there have been some discussions to use a 11.1.7 as intermediate version for some reason I do not recall. So, if above does not work, install a 11.1.7, import there, export there and then move to 11.2.3.

Apart from that I can recommend to get an experienced partner for a couple of days into the company.  You might want to contact PMsquare and ask for their advice.

And, let us know how the upgrade went. Always good to learn.

    Hi Justin,

There is nothing preventing you from moving to any new version of Cognos Analytics 11.0, 11.1, 11.2 as far as the software goes.  Here are some challenges you might need help with:

    • Legacy Studio Content - Query Studio, Analysis Studio, Workspace Advanced, Workspace: These are all deprecated in Cognos 11.X, even more so in 11.2 as it no longer supports IE (which is the only browser except for Firefox that will open these).  You need to decide how to move on from them.
    • Migration - Since you are on a version from 2014/2015 you are going to have a lot of old content.  It would be good to review what is being used/not used and plan to use the upgrade as a chance to clean up and optimize your content.
    • Supported Software - as Cognos evolves, so do the supporting technologies that go with it.  You need to make sure your data sources and content store databases are on the supported list as well as your OS.  I always try to get as many as these pieces updated during an install to avoid having to come back later to update individual components.

    • Hardware sizing - the Cognos footprint has grown significantly over time and the 2 CPU, 8 GB RAM that you could run 10.2 with is going to struggle with the newer versions.  There are some guidelines in the above URL but it's helpful to go through a tuning exercise.
    • Look and feel - It's going to look a lot different, even more so on 11.2 so users will need some guidance early on to find and run their reports.  There are also new features that you may want to expose users to as well (Dashboards, Data Modules, Exploration)

I run the install, upgrade, and performance tuning practice at Senturus, so let me know if you have any questions or would like to know more.  I've got a bunch of webinar/presentations online as well that explain some of the challenges:
