Unboxing a POWER9 S914 Server

    Morning All,

I know we all use them, but not many of us actually get to set them up, so I thought I'd create a video showing what's in the box when you get a shiny new P9 server.   If people find this useful I'll create more of these that show more details of how you cable and rack them and connect them to HMC, etc

Let me know if this sort of thing is interesting.

    Cheers Steve

    Steve,

Great video, looking forward to the next instalment.  Nice to see IBM extending HW and/or SWMA support to include sniffer dogs :-)

    All the best, Steve

    Hi Steve,

This is a great idea. I would have done the same for my AC922, but I only took pictures. ;)
However, don't forget that Niggel also made quite some of these (https://www.youtube.com/user/nigelargriffiths/videos, "First look" series), so maybe not duplicate too much... ;)

    Cheers,

     Lionel

Great video Steve and reminded me of the previous occasions I unboxed new servers, namely a 170 and a 720. Happy days!

I thought it quite interesting.  Thanks for doing that.  I do like that the tower units come with that accessory box.  Don't know why the rack mounted units do not.  I go through quite a lot of these unboxings during the year.

We should also make this a sounding board for installations.  I have a tip for V7R4 Power9's with the initial power up and setting up the console.  Connecting the laptop directly to the console port and powering on...make sure that the unit is in manual (I forget this half the time..doh!) and switch it to the B side.   Up until mid Fall of last year no issues with console customization on the A side.  Now I'm seeing units come in and if you left them on the A side, it does find the console via ACS but you never get a DST screen.   Putting it on B solves that issue.  I'll be doing a rack mounted installation this coming weekend and will be putting it on the B side this time.  IBM support really wasn't that much help.  I'm thinking there's a glitch in the LIC code or firmware when they are installing the initial load.  BTW this is on 0205 feature installations.  Haven't tried it on 5000 feature codes yet.

    Hi
    Nice unpacking video.

My recommendations as a  professional SSR :

    - when removing to top cardboard cover, slightly cut top adhesive ribon to manage air inrush and avoid this suction cup effect !

    - do not ever lift and shake those systems alone, those little babies are quite heavy (even more with base metal plate) , think of your poor spine !

    - avoid touching internal components without using an anti-static feature, I think you were quite electically charged after all those movements ;-)

    Thanks Steve, that was interesting!
You said in the video that this is part 1 - is there going to be a part 2, and what will it be about?

    Cheers,

You, like me, ignore the 'needs two blokes' indication and unpack it by myself.

Also interesting to me that it was a tower unit and as such a bit different packaging. Also the rack mount critters come with lifting handles which are very nice.

Note the Anti-Static wrist band for when you are touching bare internal components. Don't know about the U.K. but here in the Northern states in mid winter the humididity levels can be incredibly low and static electricity blasts are rather common. Juuuuust sayin. ;-)

Nice video and loved the part about NOT cutting the lid. You can imagine how often I get to customer and find they have no clue what those white plastic bits are for. :-)
