Trend lines

Hi - I want to add a trend line to a chart, but I don't seem to be able to. I've seen this article:

    https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSEP7J_11.1.0/com.ibm.swg.ba.cognos.ug_cr_rptstd.doc/t_trendline_new.html#trendline_new

But when I try to follow the instructions I don't see anything for trendlines under annotations. The article talks about Chart items - does that imply that it's only for legacy C10 charts and not the newer C11 visualisations?

If I should be able to do it with a visualisation can anyone tell me what I'm missing? Is there something that needs to be set at Admin level to allow it to happen?

Any help would be gratefully received...and save my hairline!

    C

    Hi Chris

No need to challenge your hairline over this ;-)

Trendlines are not enabled yet in the 11.1 visualizations - they do exist in the older Charts... so pick the Charts from the list:
and you should be able to see the Trendlines now:

It's on the roadmap for 11.1 visualizations also, but please vote for it so we can capture interests - https://ibm-data-and-ai.ideas.aha.io/ideas/CAOP-I-717

    Thanks

    Hey Harris,
Indeed, from a Dashboard lens we intend to add trend markers/baselines in a future release.

all such kind of simple thing requirements are implementing in Power BI/Tableau now easily in our firm. End Users asking us why not cognos we are answering them the same all of these advanced features will be in a future release since a year. But they are asking now after year Aren't these simple things still possible in cognos?

advanced features/requirements implementation went from Cognos to Power BI/Tableau tools:

    1) Excel auto refresh because nobody want to refresh manually daily/weekly/monthly - we don't have jupyter yet.
    2) Custom Tool tips like showing any text/another visualisation when you mouse hover some visualisation data point.
    3) SharePoint list and web site as data source for the dashboard(very limited data sources in Cognos compare to Power BI/Tableau)
    4) unable to create advanced data sets if we use pkg as source to dashboard it never loads the data as its huge pkg.
    5) unable to utilise existing report objects like viz or lists or cross tabs into dashboard
    6) Trend lines/thresholds/baselines in dashboards visualisations
    7) prompts like drop downs/check boxes etc in dashboards
    8) exporting data behind the visualisation and exporting full data used for dashboard as end users want to analyse in depth.
    9) setting up alerts on dashboard whenever any metric crosses threshold to send to users mail box like an alert.
    10) Tab - Tab navigation when we click on any data or buttons on the first tab
    11) Advanced custom visualisations without coding D3 etc.

    together will improve cognos

    Hi,

I feel your pain as we are in the same boat with our customers (we offer and integrated Cognos based BI/Analytics solution as a part of our SaaS product), our sales teams and our management so to why we cannot move away from the outdated system :) In our case, the only advantage is professional reporting; we built many custom reports for our customers that can never be built in Tableau or PowerBI. But it is just a matter of time before they all give up on this tool if user experience, especially for consumers, cannot be improved. Hope things will change for the better soon.

    Regards

I hope somebody can provide an answer to this related topic.

Do you know how to select the color of the trendline when 'A trendline for each series' is selected?

In the Trendline setting, when 'One trendline for all ...' it is selected, you can pick the color in the Line Styles.

However, that is not available when 'A trendline for each series' is selected, and the line is displayed white in the chart. I have been looking all over without luck.

The original background of the chart was white, and as you can see the 'One trendline for all ...' is not providing the real trend.

Adding a grey background it is not providing a good visualization on this chart and this is been use every week to monitor our operation performance.

    We are in 11.1.7-2111101256

    Appreciate any suggestion.

    Hi Irely,

I had a similar requirement and found a way to do this (it's not super simple unfortunately).

The "trick" was to break each line into a separate query and create a calc with a custom sort order.  You then union all the queries into a new query and use the sort order calc to match the order of your custom palette.

So, I wanted Golf to be black, Camping to be Green and my total (Golf + Camping) to be purple.  I create a palette in that specific order (left to right) and in each query, created a custom sort field where golf = 1, camping = 2, total =3.

When I put it all together, I added the color number calc as "Extra Data" and sorted that in ascending order.  It should pick the first color in your palette and align it with the order you set in each query.  I've attached the report XML in case you want to test it out.

    HTH,

    Todd

    Thanks for reply Todd.

I was able to fixed it. The issue was related with the Legacy Pallet.

I created a chart from scratch and leave the default palette and the trendlines showed with the same colors than the line.
When I selected the Legacy pallet, the trend lines turned white and after that they kept that color even if I selected a different pallet.
So I recreated all charts involved using something different than legacy. It must be a bug.

Its too easy just putting all the details and do it as yourself you can do it. Even you want to add any clubs like best cavity back irons or putters anything you can do that easily.
