  • 1.  TM1 Perspectives VBA migration from native to CAM authentication

    Posted Thu August 21, 2025 04:11 AM

    Hello Community

I am reaching out to the IBM community for assistance with a migration task that I am currently working on.

I have been using Excel VBA with TM1 Perspective connected to TM1 through native authentication (IntegratedSecurityMode=1) for many years.

Now, I need to migrate this setup to use CAM authentication with AD SSO.

To facilitate this migration, I am using the n_connect_cam_bridge.dll in addition to tm1api.dll to enable VBA to connect to TM1 using CAM.

I have been following the sample provided by IBM, which utilizes the n_connect_cam_bridge.dll based on the documentation found here: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/tm1-api-excel-vba-coding-and-library-automatically-connect-tm1-server-ibm-cognos-cam-security-mode-4-and-5.

However, I am encountering some challenges and would greatly appreciate any best practices or additional samples that could help guide me through this process.

Any insights or experiences you could share would be invaluable.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

    Best regards,

    Gabi Cohen

    Hi Gabi

Just to clarify here - as well as updating the authentication mode, is part of your current project to migrate to Planning Analytics for Excel, or are you planning to continue using TM1 Perspectives?

I ask as TM1 Perspectives is no longer supported with TM1 v2.1 onwards, & TM1 v2.0.9 (+ all prior versions) is unsupported by IBM from 31st October 2025, so I would advise moving to Planning Analytics for Excel as soon as possible.

Revised discontinuance of support: IBM Planning Analytics 2.0.9

Deprecated features in IBM Planning Analytics Local 2.1

There are some changes between the API in TM1 Perspectives & the API in Planning Analytics for Excel, which may require your VBA scripts to be updated as part of the migration.

It is also worth noting you will need to have Planning Analytics Workspace in order for Planning Analytics for Excel to connect to TM1.

Alternatively, Cubewise have developed Slice - a lightweight Excel add-in that doesn't depend on PAW, with several additional features to enhance your Excel experience:

    Slice

Happy to assist here as required, feel free to drop me an email:

    Hello Chris,

Thank you for your reply. Given that our customer has been running TM1 for over 20 years with extensive Excel customizations and VBA, transitioning to Planning Analytics Workspace (PAW) and Planning Analytics for Excel (PAfE) will indeed require significant modifications and user acceptance. Consequently, this transition will take some time.

At the moment, the customer has requested to switch TM1 authentication to CAM as a security requirement, but they are not ready to drop Perspectives yet. Therefore, we need to migrate the current VBA to CAM as a short-term solution. In the long term, our plan includes replacing VBA with Python and moving to PAfE.

    Thank you,

    Gabi
