Got confused with the following terminology :
Thread dump, core dump, heap dump, system core
Could you please explain, and what are the commands to take dumps?

Run this command:
            wsadmin> $AdminControl invoke $jvm dumpThreads

    If you want to force heap dump, run the following command:
            wsadmin> $AdminControl invoke $jvm generateHeapDump

check above commands and revert for further help

you can use wsadmin Jython commands for heap dump

-AdminControl.invoke(AdminControl.completeObjectName("type=JVM, process=,*"), "generateHeapDump")

also

kill -3 JVM_PID is used for javacore fies .

In my terms,

Thread dump  - lets you know current statuses of all the threads in JVM - whether they are working, waiting, hung etc

Heapdump - lets you know the status of JVM heap memory like what application objects are consuming what heap memory and so on

Core dump - what I know is its a (unix) process level detailed dump.
