I'm not sure how to respond to this because we're generally supposed to avoid political topics here and Musk has wedged himself into our political system.

Your conclusions are based on an assumption that this is in any way based on efficiency, or even logic. The fact of the matter is that Federal employees of all stripes have been getting emails encouraging them to quit since this started, without regard to performance ratings or how necessary their skills are. And that's before entire organizations and probationary employees were straight out fired without regard to performance ratings or how necessary their skills are.

Moreover, Musk has repeatedly shown that he lacks an understanding or curiosity about IT. I can't be the only one who remembers when he bought Twitter and declared that he was going to shut down the microservices... and then broke MFA because anyone who understands the basic concept of microservices architecture knows that you can't just randomly pull out services based on RPC calls. More recently he not only broadcast a lack of understanding of COBOL but the concept of deduplication.

So, I would say that it's impossible to say what will keep Civil Servant mainframers jobs safe at this time. For any champions who are civil servants... as the husband of a non-IT civil servant, I know that it's a rough time right now. I don't know what to tell you beyond that you are important and your skills with the mainframe (or any other part of IT) are valuable.
