    Did you checked your /tmp filesystem space or other fs usage , It happens to me when we have /tmp 100% , telnet or ssh get hangs.

    i have seen aixes configured accidentally with multiple default gateways. check with netstat -rn or multiple times run route get "machine where you run telnet". should be the same route/gw shown every time

    How long do you leave it before giving up? If it's less than 60 seconds, leave it longer than 60 seconds. Reverse DNS lookups on inbound IP addresses are done when you connect via telnet, if the DNS servers aren't responding or there are other name server issues, the connection can take a long time to succeed.
