Last night when it run a tar file to the tape, the OS displayed this error and my log indicated the error message with ": The media surface is damaged". I replaced a new tape this morning. But how can i ensure that there is no problem with tape drive itself? I used the "tctl -f /dev/rmt0 status", there was no sign of error.

    And when I checked the tape, the tape spilled out extra length outside the tape case. So I suspected there was something wrong with the drive.
    However, used the cleaning tape cleaned the drive and retried to tar the same files, no error found.
