On December 31 my tape drive (8mm 20/40) went bad (stuck tape that could not be removed). At the time, I chose to use an identical drive out of my test box and wait for the replacement to arrive the following week.
Just a few days earlier I used one of the tapes that was written with the now failed drive to restore my test machine. I have now been requested to restore the box again. Unfortunately, the tape can no longer be read with either of my drives. I get the message "tar: tape read error: I/O error".
Another weird thing is that I can no longer use the dd command on either machine. I get the message "dd read error: Invalid argument". The command I use is: dd if=/dev/rmt0 of=/tmp/tapetest count=1
Current backups are being made successfully every night and those tapes can be read just fine.
Any help with the cause and/or resolution of these problems will be greatly appreciated.
