system slows down during to cp or backup

    The reasons for this could be many. First of all when you say slow.....how "slow" does the server really become?

    If backup is run with compression option then that will take CPU cycles. How is your disk subsystem configured? Is the I/O well distributed over the disks? Are there multiple controllers? Are there other activities going on on the same disk leading to disk contention (the I/O wait time is high)? How are the I/O buffers, jfs filecaching, memory parameters configured? If you are using SAN, is there contention in there? Are the filesystems jfs or jfs2?

    And the list goes on.... But these are some of the items you could look into.
