If you have "Call Home" set up then that will capture most of your fatal system hardware issues like overheating, power issues...etc. If you're on a SAN it should also have a "Call Home" feature.
You can monitor the system errlog for certain errors that you are concerned about like stale partitions or DISK MISSING...etc. You come up with your own list.
I used to monitor some things with my own scripts but my company purchased Tivoli Monitoring a few years ago. So I was told to use it. I mostly use it for monitoring disk space, host downs, and a few processes I was using Netsaint prior to that which is now called Nagios(freeware). I still use that for my systems that are being held hostage on their OS(4.3) by vendors. You could take a look at either of those to help you.
