I would like to here your experience/recommendation regarding environment where I have DS8800+SVC and AIX with Oracle for DWH. What is the best practice if I have LUNs/vdisks from SVC where they are already striped in Storage Pool over mdisks and AIX LVM?

    1. Should I use AIX LVM lv striping or not?
    2. Should I create less VG on AIX side with many hdisks/vdisks and create lv in stripe mode over all hdisks or I should use many VGs with less hdisks/vdisks and stripe lv over all hdisks?

I am confusing with SVC striping over AIX LVM striping. Is it good approach to create lv in stripe mode over hdisks or should I create lv mapped to one hdisk?

Please if you have any experience with this design to explain to me what is the best way to setup my environment.

    Thank you in advance.

Let your SVC do the striping. We recently moved from a gpfs solution that striped multiple disks on the back end of our storage environment (RAID5 LUNs presented from DS4800s) to an SVC that managed the storage completely. You don't want to stripe on top of the stripe that the SVC is handling if you can avoid it.

The only time you really would want to stripe at your host is if you are presenting the host with disks that are from separate pools of storage that are also backed by separate set of physical drives/spindles.

In the end though, it is best if you can test multiple configurations and make benchmarked tests to test your environment.
