Does STATIME parameter determines the interval for SMF 115 and 116 both?

    Hi Deb,

That depends on what version of IBM MQ you are using. In versions earlier than V9.2.4 the answer is Yes. The STATIME parameter determines the interval for both statistics and accounting data.

In IBM MQ V9.2.4 a new additional parameter was added to the SET SYSTEM command, ACCTIME. If ACCTIME has the value -1, then STATIME will still determine the interval for both statistics and accounting data.

If, however, you wish to have a different interval for statistics data versus accounting data you can supply different values in these two parameters, STATIME and ACCTIME, from V9.2.4 onwards, in order to achieve that.

Read more in the description of the SET SYSTEM command.

    Hope that helps,
    Cheers,

    Hi Morag,
unfortunately we are at 9.1.0 , Do you see an issue with the accounting side (116)if with minimize that STATIME=1 rather than 0.

If you currently have STATIME=0, then you are collecting accounting and statistics at the SMF global recording interval which defaults to 30 minutes. You haven't told us what your current SMF global recording interval is set to.

Changing the setting to STATIME=1 would now start collecting accounting and statistics every minute. This could be quite a big difference in behaviour depending on what your current SMF global recording interval is set to. So you should understand exactly what change you are causing by making this change. For example, it could be a change from 30 minutes -> 1 minute, or it could be no change at all if your SMF global recording interval is set to 1 minute already.

With regard to whether running both accounting and statistics at a one minute interval is sensible you should probably read a few of the following posts by Lyn Elkins, foremost MQ SMF expert, to determine the answer.

It is worth noting that in V9.2.4 IBM have separated the intervals for accounting and statistics due to a recognition that it may not be appropriate to run both on the same collection interval.

In addition, the blog post I pointed you to earlier (What's new in MQ for z/OS 9.2.4 - SMF enhancements) by Tony Sharkey, IBM Hursley's MQ for z/OS Performance expert has a whole section to answer the questions: "How frequently should statistics and accounting data be collected?" and the associated costs. If you have not already, you should read that post.

    Cheers,
    Morag

    Good morning,

I know several customers who set the Interval to one minute.  Some who leave it at that all the time.

The benefits are very granular data, much easier to catch that point when things go off the rails.  The downside is that it can be more  difficult to consolidate the accounting data for long running tasks.

    Thanks
    Lyn
