  • 1.  SPSS error 1216

    Posted Sun November 15, 2020 04:49 PM

    Hello,

Recently I installed SPSS statistics 25 on my Windows 10 64 bit computer. Whenever I opened the app, error: 1216 occured. I copied below what the error says to be more precise. I tried all the options that were suggested in the forum. Nothing works. I also installed spss 27 to see if there is a difference, same error occurs.

    >Error # 1216

    >A file cannot be opened. Probable causes are an attempt to open a read-only

    >file for output, a directory which is too full, an invalid file specification,

    >the specification of a non-existent disk, etc. Use an asterisk (*) on the

    >OUTFILE command to specify the active dataset or specify an external file name

    >or file handle.

    >This is an error from which the application cannot recover.

    >The SPSS Statistics run will terminate now.

It's hard to guess the cause, but one possibility is that you have a temporary directory specification that does not work. Look at Edit > Options > Files and make sure that the temporary directory exists and is writeable.

It says "Attempt to connect to a remote server failed." It gives this error when I launch the app too.

There is a technote on this that might help.

Unless you are using Statistics Server, it isn't really trying to connect to a remote server. It runs the "server" backend locally on your system, but a firewall can sometimes block things.
