  • 1.  SPSS does not start

    dear IBM

    spss does not start (anymore).

after the very first installation it worked.

then installed java-update and since then spss does not start. no error message. blue sum sign appears and then gone again.

    win 10, 64bit

    spss 27, 64bit

    java 8_281

    sophos antivirus, 10.8

installed everything as admin, licensed as admin, started as admin but always the same. i even went to the dos prompt, jumped to the installation directory and ran "stats.exe". again briefly the blue sum sign then again in the dos prompt.

uninstalled everything cleanly via control panel, even uninstalled java, reinstalled spsss as admin. same problem. reinstalled java 8, no change.

gave full access to the whole directory "ibm" - no change.

licensing is ok, i see until 1.8.2021.

on the third try i even disabled the firewall; no change...

    can you help me?

is it possible that spss27 and java8 are not compatible?

unfortunately i have no idea anymore.

    thanks, tom

SPSS Statistics installs its own JVM, so java is not likely to be the problem.

Do you see Statistics in the taskbar? If you have multiple monitors or have changed screen resolution, it might be running but off screen. In that case, click on a taskbar window to set focus on one of the Statistics windows. Then press alt+spacebar, which will bring up the system menu, cursor down to Move, and hold down the appropriate arrow key until the window appears on screen.

    hello jon

    thanks for trying.

problem is that program does not start at all. it makes the attempt (blue sum sign appears, white ring around it runs briefly) and then gone.

in taskmanager i don't see any open task - so it doesn't start.

If SPSS Statistics is running invisibly, you would find spssengine and stats in the Task Manager details view (along with startx sometimes). If you run from a DOS window, I would expect to see some traceback information in that window when the system starts.

You can also go to the installation directory and run

    testload spssengine.exe

    or

    testload stats.exe

to see what happens with those modules. Maybe you will get a useful error message, but beyond that, I can't help you. Maybe the official Support people have more ideas.

    Hi Support Member,

One thing we have not yet asked about is your Sophos Anti-virus. Is that also new to your system? Often such packages can keep the 'frontend' (stats.exe) and the 'backend' (spssengine.exe) from communicating.

    • Can you uninstall or completely disable Sophos to test your installation?
    • Can you make sure you have rules in your Firewall (or disable the firewall while you test) to allow traffic between these two processes?
    • I'd agree, IBM SPSS Statistics ships with its own IBMJava. So whatever other Java you have installed shouldn't make a difference. Can you unintall your JAva and test? OR perhaps change where it is referenced on the %PATH% environment variable such that it comes after SPSS Statistics?

    Some other ideas,

    Support Member

    hi david

    thanks for these ideas.

unfortunately, this does not lead to any change either.

uninstalled sophos antivirus, disabled firewall, uninstalled java 8. also uninstalled spss and reinstalled cleanly as administrator. exactly the same, does not start properly.

when i try this in dos-prompt with "testload spssengine.exe" no message comes up - so somehow works. and "testload stats.exe" again the blue sign but no correct start (without error message again in dos-prompt)...

    some other ideas? or ibm-support?
