  • 1.  Setting language in PAFE

    Posted Thu September 01, 2022 07:39 PM
    Hi Community,

I have a colleague with Windows = Chinese; Excel = English; PAFE = Chinese. The individual would like PAFE to be in English.

    Two questions:

    1. What Windows setting controls the language in PAFE? Some cursory search makes me believe it's Windows regional settings, but would be great to get confirmation on the exact setting.

    2. If it's a Windows setting, and the Windows setting cannot be overwritten, is there an override in PAFE (e.g. CognosOfficeReportingSettings.xml / TM1Features.json / etc)? We've already tried tinkering with LanguageResources without much success.

    Thanks in advance!

Actually, I answered my own question 1.
It's Region settings (intl.cpl) > Formats tab > Format field.

Part 2 remains, is there an override to that?

yes, PA for Excel follows the system culture.

as before in the old multi-file version, expectation is that you can adjust the resources on profile to custom cross map culture to a relevant language pack.

the doc topic is slightly stale (as the disk format was adjusted in the single file version), but still generally applies. (which is, 'put the file in the place to get the outcome you want')

    https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/planning-analytics/2.0.0?topic=rcoc-run-cognos-office-components-in-english-in-localized-microsoft-windows-environment

so, in your specific example, you should be able to take the relevant 'zh' language resource in <userprofile>\AppData\<profile layer>\Cognos\Office Connection\LanguageResources , and replace them with renamed copies of the 'en' files. be sure to do both the cor and coi messages. note the steps may need to be repeated whenever the software is updated with new strings, though we have some protections in place to reduce this.

long term, we may introduce a more explicit locale override setting as we look to compact the addin footprint further (and want to remove such labor), but for now strings are being managed in the longstanding flow and some customers have an existing dependency there (as you can see from the topic). That's not something we've signaled a change timeline for, but I would like to exit.

Thank you Ted for the explanation.

Not sure if I am the only one seeing this but it appears that LanguageResources are overwritten each time Excel is started, so the renaming doesn't seem to work for me. Is that intentional?

One override I thought of was to set the renamed file as "Read Only" which does seem to work.

it should not be the case that it's continuously overwritten ('... we have some protections in place to reduce this'), if that's your finding i suggest opening a case w/IBM though i'll try to pursue it internally regardless.

glad to hear the RO is functioning as a workaround (resourceful as ever ;-) )
