  • 1.  Save report as a PDF without but not opening in browser tab

    Posted Wed December 06, 2023 01:30 PM

Hi, I am calling Cognos report from other application, and all parametars are send to report through application. Now I want to output be opened in PDF format, but I don't want to that be in the browser.

I am using similary BI Publisher and it particularly saves report in PDF in temporarily files and opens pdf automatically and user can save as it where he wants.

    Thanks

    Hi Veljko,

You might want to test the following.

Set the following advanced settings on the query service 'VIEWER_PDFJS = false' and 'RSVP.PDF.USE_ADOBE_DRILL = true' which will default to browser pdf viewer and not the one bundled with CA.

    Best regards,

    Hi Veljko,

I think @Patrick Neveu's reply is what you're looking for. I'm adding a couple of other options, just in case ;-) .

    1. CA embedding view syntax - you can ask Cognos for a report/dashboard without the Cognos "glass" around it, by specifying &ui_navbar=false&ui_appbar=false on the end of the CA URL  (the full syntax for the "custom URL"  format is described here.)

    2. Using CMS to retrieve just the raw PDF output - this was discussed recently in another post here. (you probably want to read the whole thread for context).

    Example:

    https://us3.ca.analytics.ibm.com/bi/v1/disp/rds/outputFormat/report/i15E936FAE97A43AE88385CADB5B7807E/PDF?p_product=Earl%20Grey&p_type=Black%20tea&async=off

First, thank you all for answering. Can you maybe be more precisely, what I have to do for the second option. I am sending parameters through URL. Also, since I ma using and Cognos 8 and Cognos 11.2 :), is this possible for both versions.

    Thank you

    Hi Veljko,

For the second option (using CMS) you can pass parameters (i.e prompt answers) through the URL, as well. You can use the simplified "p_" format (for example, to add a parameter value of "red", for a report parameter named "colour", you add a "?p_colour=red" to your URL, or for more complicated parameter responses, you can add the ?xmlData query parameter to your URL. Both these options are described in more detail here.

Now for the bad news. While CMS was introduced in Cognos 8, I believe the rds/outputFormat REST endpoint (described above) was only added to CMS in Cognos 10.

You want these reports to be in PDF format but not pop up in the browser. There are a few ways to handle this. One is to check if there's a setting in Cognos that lets you make PDFs without showing them in the browser. Another way is to set up your system so that when you call Cognos from your app, it automatically saves the PDF somewhere on the server. Then, you can give users a link to download it. Another idea is to use tools like BI Publisher, which might have features that do what you're looking for – saving reports in PDFs and letting users save them where they want. Just make sure whatever method you pick keeps your data safe and follows your security rules!
