Hello, is there any documentation available (e.g. knowledge center, technote etc...) that provides performance related tips to properly configure S3 storage (for either Advanced Storage or Fixed Content Device)?

Well, we will conduct load tests against a IBM Cloud Object Storage device on Monday (day after tomorrow) and then we will know. Performance is against FCD only. I do not think highly of ASA when fine grained retention is in order...

I'm wondering what the background of your question is. Are you seeing bad performance? My expectation for Monday would certainly be three digits number of documents per second...

Hi Gerold, thanks so much fo reaching out. The customer is planning a move to S3 storage for FileNet content. So before doing this, they just wanted to know if there's any sort of technical tips (e.g. in the form of a technote or similar...) that may provide some configuration advice at the FileNet configuration-level (but possibly not limited to), e.g. in the form of do and/or donts, to prevent performance drops before they roll S3 out. They are moving content from "legacy" Centera/CAS Fixed Storage. The system is pretty mission critical in that they serve nation-wide branch offices of a relevant government agency here in Italy.

we are not as far as we desired with the load tests. I could advise a little bit better if I knew what type of storage the customer is looking at.

First, as I said, if you want fine grained retention that is controlled by CPE in an aligned way you only have 3 options:

Dell ECS

Hitachi HDS

IBM Cloud Object Storage

Fourth would be IBM Spectrum Protect, but that does not offer S3 Api.

We tested with 1 MB PDFs but against a virtual IBM COS on VMware with virtual disks as our production is not ready yet.

Unfortunately we easily saturated our virtual F5 load balancer (which is licensed for 200 Mbit throughput), so results are bare minimum.

For now we saw 30 docs/sec, reading a doc gives approx. 100 ms latency.

More in a week, when we test against a bare metal ICOS with smaller PDFs (300kb), with real disks and a LB that does not have a throughput limit.

I'm still confident we can get < 100 docs/sec.
