Is it possible to add rolling 12 months calculation in Cognos Analytics Dashboard (Not report studio) based on month selection filter?

Yes, but there are a few things you need to consider.

The dashboard filter bar applies to all visualisations within the dashboard. If you have only chosen a single month in the filter bar, then ALL visualisations will only be for a single month, regardless of what additional filters/calculations you apply to individual visualisations.

Which means that you need some easy way for the user t choose 12 rolling months in the filter bar, rather than a calculation.

If you want you ,could then filter individual visualisations to a single month.

Should the user be able to choose which 12 rolling months, or will it always be the same 12 rolling months, for example relative to today.

Just a few more thoughts before you think of an answer.

Nori - I am replying here rather than via email so that others can benefit from the answers...

When you pick a month in the dashboard filter bar all data is filtered to that month. It isn't possible to create bespoke filters for each visualisation based on the filter bar. If that's what you must have then Cognos Reporting is capable of that kind of functionality and may be a better fit for you.

Back to dashboards; if you want a rolling 12 month trend graph, and you have chosen a single month in the filter bar, then that 12 month graph will be filtered to a single month.

To get different time ranges, relative to a single month in different visualisation requires very creative data modelling, something way out of the scope of this forum. I am currently in a project doing just this kind of modelling. In our data source we have the usual calendar dimension. But we have also created a timespan dimension for every fact. the time span dimension has such entries as Single Month, Rolling 12 Months, Year To Date. In our dashboards you can select a month from the time dimension, but then apply the appropriate dimension member from the time span dimension. This gives the functionality of a user being able to choose a single month in the filter bar, but we can then apply different timespans to individual visualisations within the canvas.
I sense a blog post coming...
